Recently, a small town in Northern
California attempted to pass what could have
been “the most stringent tobacco regulation
in America.” In January 2007, the City
Council of Belmont – a suburb of San
Francisco – proposed a ban that would have
limited smoking to detached single family
homes and their yards. This means that all
outdoor smoking would be made illegal.
Further, the proposed ban included multifamily
units, specifically apartments and condominiums.
If you lived in such a dwelling,
the law would have made it illegal for you to
smoke in your own living room.
Fortunately, the people of Belmont have spoken
and the proposed ban was tabled for the
time being. While it is easy to dismiss this as
more ramblings, cigar smokers must understand
that if Belmont, or any other city in
California is able to pass a ban similar to this
one, other states will undoubtedly follow.
This is a simple reminder from the Toraño
Family that for all of us who enjoy the right to
smoke premium cigars, we must be vigilant to
our local and state governments’ proposed
anti-smoking and tobacco tax-related legislation.
If your hometown endeavors to take
away your tobacco rights, then you must
make it known to them that this is unacceptable
to you. Grassroots efforts such as writing
letters to your newspaper or calling your government
representatives to voice your displeasure
with anti-tobacco legislation make a
difference. If a city like Belmont succeeds,
you can be sure that we all lose.
