With all the talk about gas prices, I thought I'd mention an article I stumbled across. The article appears legit. (More specific detail here).

Basically, this fellow claims that with a few ounces of Acetone added to your 20 gallon gas tank you can improve your mileage by 20-30%. With today's gas prices and the cost of a gallon of Acetone (about $12-13), if it works it would certainly be cost effective.

Anyone here ever heard of this or actually tried it?

Here is a pretty detailed Wiki on the subject.

Edited to add Wiki Link.

My first reaction to this was that it was dangerous, even before I spent 30 minutes reading everything on the page posted by brewmeister, and it still sounds like a bad idea.

This is interesting,

Here they discount it as myth.

Here we see that the affect to be somewhat varied. Looks like it works for some engines and at different gas/acetone ratios. Seems it worked pretty good mixed with diesel.

The downside to this is the rubber that is used in seals and fuel lines is seceptable to early wear and failure.

Blowing a gasket or leaking all the gas out of my car arent chances I'd take to get a few more miles to the gallon.

errrrrrr..

does not work.

Back in the day I tried every sort of additive.

WHile it did increase octane by 1% (verified using ATap software OBDII) It never did in fact increase gas mileage.
MIleage for the Grand Prix stayed at 25 MPg mixed (highway and city)

Verifired on 10 other cars. using OBDII and Atap software.

Beleive me We tried everything to increase octane and MPG

I've heard of it - every single Diesel board that I have been on has discussed it. And I know of one guy who tried it. "0" increase in mileage. There was however a small increase in power - at first. This is most likely due to the fact that acetone is a cleaner, so if you have dirty injectors then it would clean those up hence the slight feeling of power.
In the Diesel world though - I think that any amount required to actually raise cetane would - due to acetone being a cleaner - reduce the lubrication of the fuel which is more harmful to the motor and seals.

I just got a new Vette, so I dont think I will be putting any Acetone in the tank any time soon!

I would think that ethenol or Methenol would be better for gas milage and for your car though..

I'd pass on this one too. The last thing I used acetone for was to suck all the smelly, yellow, greasy stuff out of a bear skull. Now that, it works for!

Greetings! I do not personally use gas or oil additives or devices of any kind. They are generally a waste of money, and they will likely eventually cause your vehicle to have mechanical problems. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has some articles on the Internet about such vehicle additives and devices. Yes, it would be great to find a proven and safe way to improve our gas mileage, in view of the current high cost of fuel. Regards, knightlaird

A friend of mine tried it with his motorcycle, and was very scientific about the whole ordeal. The experiment lasted two months and the acetone helped "0"

if i had a clunker of a car as a backup vechicle, i would try it. but not on my primary vechicle, interesting, but ,no thanks.
