Anyone have experience with the Google MyTouch?

I traded my Blackberry for a Gooogle Droid on Verizon's network and it is incredible.

Full disclosure: I've used an android phone for over a year now and love it. I used a blackberry for over 3 years (multiple phones with most recent being the curve) and hated them all)

It's tough to compare the android phones to a blackberry as they serve two different market segments. In my opinion, it's sorta like comparing a pager and a cell phone. In fact, the blackberry platform is actually a pager that's been upgraded and modified many times over the years. Blackberry devices started out as two-way pagers with support for email and only later did the device become a phone. This is the key reason the OS seems so odd when compared to other smart phones (i use the term "smart phone" loosely as I really don't consider the blackberry to be in the same category). The newest OS on the storm and similar devices attempts to fix this, but RIM really has very little experience at designing such software and it shows.

So with t-mobile your choices are: Android, Windows mobile, and Blackberry for your major smart phone OSes/vendors. I assume you've already ruled out windows mobile. If so, smart choice by the way.

So let me see if I can take a stab at comparing the blackberry and mytouch:

Android/mytouch Pros (when compared to a blackberry):
- Iphone like OS with support for multiple apps, a market place, upgradable phone storage, excellent media support, etc.. etc..
- Your choice of just an on screen keyboard (mytouch) or both (G1)
- Google search built in for searching contacts, email, the web, calendar entries etc... etc.. all at the same time
- Syncs contacts with gmail, so no more clunky desktop apps or archaic sim card stuff to migrate to the newest android phone
- Version 2.0 of the software will support multiple email accounts (due out in Q1)
- Uses a full internet data plan with no limitations on the type of usage (most blackberry phones use a blackberry data plan which places limitations on the type of data usage that can be done. For example, most can't do streaming data. I think this is better with more recent phones, not sure which one you have.)
- The marketplace is much much better on the android and there are a better selection of free apps
- Larger userbase than the blackberry "smartphones"
- Touch screen keyboard is much more responsive and easier to use.

Android/mytouch cons (when compared to a blackberry):
- Exchange server support may be lacking
- Android pretty much requires a google account (AKA gmail) to work properly
- data plan may be slightly more expensive depending on how tmobile does the plans now for blackberry phones
- Exporting all your contacts and such from the blackberry may be difficult. It was when I switched.

That said, I'd consider waiting before picking up a new smartphone from t-mobile. The mytouch is really just a G1 with new paint and the G1 is nearly 2 years old now. My guess is that we'll see HTC release a new android phone for t-mobile very soon. Either that or t-mobile will likely pick up one of the other big players (iphone or palm). The G1 and mytouch are pretty anemic hardware wise. They are the very first generation android devices, so you may be buying an already obsolete phone if you get one of those now.

If you must get a t-mobile smart phone right now, I'd recommend either a G1 or MyTouch over any blackberry. RIM's latest OS and app support is horrible when compared to the android platform.

P.S. The best android phone out right now by far is the droid. The combination of Verizon (they aren't lying about their data networks in the commercials) and the much faster hardware in the droid make it an awesome smartphone. The droid has it's own quirks such as software incompatibility with many apps and other things, but it's still the best deal in my opinion. I like it even better than the iphone when you consider that the iphone requires you to use ATT who can't seem to understand why their customers like to use data plans with their iphones.

Isy I love my G1..I like to be able to use a keyboard. Have had no problems with phone or service. If you have a friend who is good with computers you could always have him hack any phone system you want on it. I was running the Hero system on my G1 8 months before it was released in the states.

The Hero system? What is that?

Thanks for all the replies. I've pulled the trigger and it will be here before New Years.

Congrats. I've got an extra invite to Google voice also if you want me to add you to the queue. It's very handy if you find yourself juggling multiple phone numbers and getting a lot of voicemail.

That would be cool, David. Thanks!

Am I the only one who thinks these phones just are not worth it? I have had Verizon for 8 years now, and have had numerous smartphones and PDA phones, and not only were most of the phones garbage, but the plans were WAY too much money. Frankly, $30+ for internet, just ain't worth it, IMHO. Ms KB recently got a Samsung Rogue, which is a "multimedia" phone, and now we pay $10 extra for 25 MB a month.

I'm glad to say that my new phone last month was free, and frankly, I think it's a good looking (and good working) phone! Nokia 7205.

*Rant off* :whistling:

*That being said, I would probably surrender to the Iphone is Verizon ever got it. I love my Ipod Touch. *

Definitely not the only one. I never really thought I needed something with email, until I got the BB. But it's all about what you need (or want) the phone for. Really, all of us need the phone to make and receive calls...that's it. It's the extras that each of us have to decide if its worth the coin or not. Some people need to email feature. Do I? Probably not....but it's nice to have a phone with email, browser, etc...
