I used to rent my HD tuner from Time Warner Cable in Houston (a digital zone city) at $3 a month. Now my only option is DirecTV here in Dallas and I have to buy a tuner for $470+ and add some more antenna parts! I am trying to find an HDTV tuner for under $300, if possible. Used or new, it's not a big deal. Anyone have some leads?

Try ebay. I have DTV, really like it alot. LOTS of channels. :)

I don't know much about HDTV, but DirecTV tuners are around $80...unless your talking about something else. ???

Guys, HDTV=High Definition TV...Thus needing a specified receiver to work... You would think they would incorporate it into the TV, but I guess they are counting on people with HDTV to use sat or cable...Dunno.

I've actually done quite a bit of research on the subject and am not pleased with my findings on seperate receivers. I assume that since you've already been using one, your TV is equipped to handle the resolutions HDTV provides though, so you'll be able to avoid many of the pitfalls that make this such a touchy subject. The cost of receivers (and I've never seen one for the prices you're looking for - at least not a decent one by a respectable company :-) really has not come down much. Give it six months or so and they should drop some. For people like me that just the standard old TV and are just getting ready to upgrade, it's almost always more cost efficient and less problematic to just upgrade to an HDTV with receiver/processor built in!

Sorry I can't help you find a cheaper one!

I understand they are talking about changing the coding on these. Something else to do with copyrights. Might want to hold off to see how it shakes out.

McP, I'd hold off on one of those puppies for a while. Congress is deep pocketing all the money from the broadcasters, Hollywood, etc... The HDTV codes are changing which basically means that you'd be SOL if you bought one now, because the current HDTV's are NOT upgradeable at all. From my understanding, the new codes would be in effect by 2003-2004.

Bottom line opinion:
Don't waste the cash.
