Looks like the kids hid one for Christmas for me. Its the Brinkmann Gourmet Electric model for around $89 at Walmart.

I use a Weber Silver Series to grill with but was looking to try smoking some items. Any comments, problems, hints? Wife thought about getting the gas model but stayed to the electric.

The electric is great for the part timer. I just basically use the electric burner to get the charcoal going, then I unplug it. One bit of advice just fill the bottom once with charcoal, if your are cooking longer that 6 hrs add more. You won't need as much charcoal as you think unless it is cold and windy outside. I find the electris burner gets too hot and cooks to quickly. Sometimes I will plug it back in when I need to rush things a little, for instance I drink too much and forget to keep the temp right and folks start showing up for dinner. Just plug it in and move things along a little quicker.

Trust me, just use the burner to get the charcoal going. If you use it the full time it will cook too fast. I have been using it for 8 yrs. Never use lighter fluid or green wood, both impart a nasty taste in my opinion.

Cheers and good luck.

I just got a Weber Smokey Mountain. Uses coal. Works great. I have heard the electrics are great for maintaining constant temperature. The only drawback was they do not have as much heat as coal or gas, so you should try to avoid using it on windy days!!!

Lots of fun and the BBQ turns out great!! Enjoy!!

I have a few smokers including the electric. I would not recommend it for anything except fish. I use mine to smoke about 75lbs. of bluefish each year, charcoal and wood can't keep the fire cool enough for me. If you want to try PM me for a recipe.
