Ashtrays - OK to sell here?

Huh? Well of course Dave is going to make a profit??? After all it is Dave's profession, he pays his bills, and buys cigars with those profits. Just as the cigar retailers who frequent this forum make a profit on the sale of cigars. I don't think anyone expects Dave to do otherwise. In my opinion if:
  1. Dave does not gouge anyone
  2. Rod has given you his blessings
  3. And it is kept in the retailer forum
It should be fine.

X(what is it, 6 now?)

Pick a 'hat', Dave.

CP member or CP Retailer?

If you can pull off BOTH....you'd be among a select few.

Good Luck.

GULP! That's my greatest fear!

I would hate to compromise the relationships I have begun to develop with the wonderful people here because of an attempt to offer the work of my hands as a modest extension of my full-time business.

Not so select. I can think of six just off the top of my head, but all are cigar vendors who have chosen to participate in the community as well as to offer the best deals they can. Doc refers to The Volusianator. While he has talent with cabinetry, he tried to sell something that just about anyone can make. Price was high for the work involved. The ashtrays are unique and require skill and talent. Charge a fair price, Dave.

I will do everything in my power to treat people fairly and to live out the "Golden Rule" just as I try to do in all my interactions. I have many repeat customers and months of scheduled work in front of me because, I believe, I work hard, I do high quality work and I give people value for their money.

I have a 1500 square foot workshop in a building on its own property, over $55,000 in tools and equipment, over $8,000 in wood inventory and my hourly rate for shop time is only $50 an hour. I do not believe that you will find any commercial venture today with that low a rate for shop time. (My wife says I am nuts and should be charging more, and that day will come, I am sure. My full size van only gets 12 mpg and I'll have to pay for gas somehow! :D )

The ashtrays have been taking a little over an hour and a half to complete and I believe I can get that down a little by doing a few at a time. Material cost runs from very little for the salvaged wood I used for the first two, to over $35.00 for a fancy burl turning blank or exotic figured wood. Thus I can see these costing from about $70 to something over $100 plus shipping.

I hope this sheds some additional light on my attitude, investment, and costs and will give everyone an understanding of why I will be charging the prices I need to charge to survive.

I will try to do this the right way.

I'm a newb, but I say go for it. Your work is awesome, I'd definitely be happy to have one of those pieces of functional art in my home. Pm me when your first run is ready!

Edited for grammar.

I am echoing my support for your endeavor Dave.
