After reading through the Social Security thread and the comments about identity, it made me think of this.If you've never heard of this, you should be aware. It's one of the ways that "thieves" break into your bank accounts. The news clip below has some good suggestions at the end on how to prevent this from happening.

The actual concept is actually relatively simple and cheap to do (less than $100 USD) but it's even cheaper on how to prevent it:

- cover your hand when entering a pin, whether at an ATM or at the checkout line
- have your pin changed regularly
- use 6 digits where possible
- do NOT use your birthday, your spouses birthday, kids, your SSN/SIN or other easily identifiable numbers
- avoid using free-standing machines in convenience stores (go to banks where you go into it to use the ATM)
- regularly check to see if any unusual withdrawals have occurred.

With the current financial situation going on, I suspect we'll see these rise a bit as people get desperate to make ends meet.
