Awkward situation

...we don't like them because they believe the world revolves around them and they are the only ones that matter in the neighborhood.

I found it interesting that most of the advice was 1) it is not illegal so go tell them to go Fxxx themselves, 2) smoke them out with herfs, 3) fire up the grills.

Seems like that would perpetuate your major criticism of the couple who lives up the street. I agree with your original inquiry, and your response to the woman...seeking a compromise--that way you are not caving in, nor are you making the world revolve around yourself.

It is difficult to have tact with people who may not be willing to compromise but that is where creativity comes in. The relationship you have with your immediate neighbor shows an excellent and plausible solution.

I agree with Thanksfornotsmoking that there is probably something deeper than hatred for the leaf in regards to their reason for complaining. And perhaps showing an awareness and respect to them will help facilitate a better relationship.

What sucks with interacting with people who think the world revolves around them is that often times we have to be more humble and respectful to get their attention--and help them see how unreasonable their requests may be.

I tried to be tactful and courteous with her and explained that I would be willing to look over and see if they are on the deck. However, I fear she only heard and put a twist of her own that I won't smoke at all. Therefore, the second confrontation may not be as pleasant from their side.

I will have to reiterate my stance that I will am willing to show them courtesy in looking to see if they are out. That I never said from the beginning that I will deny myself the pleasure of he leaf and that it is highly unreasonable to ask someone not to do something on their own deck. I will then counter that it would be like me asking him not to mow his lawn 4x a week because I find the noise and fumes offensive when I try to eat.

They really are pieces of work. I could write volumes on examples of their arrogance.

I would probably agree with them and say that i would but just continue doing as you normally do.

I plan on doing what I normally do. That won't change. :D

Apparently, they must have polled all my immediate neighbors to see if they can get anyone against me. My neighbor to the left of me just told my fiance today that "whatever makes you happy, it's your deck" "it doesn't bother me" and was very sincere in that statement. Interesting.

I have no doubts that when I do decide to go about my routine and they get a whiff, they are going to try and make me out like some inconsiderate prick (which I don't care) I will just dig my heels in even further while not being an inconsiderate prick, but by being a pleasant and polite prick! :p
