Basic number trick

Did not work at all for me. I must have broken it

I tried a new set of numbers and it worked.
Now I have to figure out how it works. It seems like I new it a while back, but I couldnt quite figure it out today.
 
Got bored in class and tried it out....it didnt get my number....well what the hell is that all about?

Tried it again and it worked the second time!
 
The only time I've seen this not work was because of subtraction mistakes or not following the instructions correctly. Mathematically it HAS to work.
