Today was the first practice of my 10-11 year old co-ed basketball team. I inherited this team from my girlfiend who signed me up for the coach (without my knowledge)

I have a total of 11 kids...3 girls and 8 boys..all sizes and shapes..black..white...Philipino...Mexican...

Practice today went well..everyone was on time...the kids had a blast...next practice thursday..gonna celebrate with a nice Padron Fumas and a icy Pale Ale

I love coaching. I coached co-ed soccer for 3 years before I had to report ofr deployment. It is a very fulfilling experience. Your 2 biggest challanges will be:

1. Getting the boys to compete w/ the girls as equals.
2. Making sure everyone gets equitable playing time and still keep the team competitive.

Make sure that the parents and the kids know you are in charge and the rest should fall into place. I wish I was still coaching right now. I envy you.

That's great but what are YOU gonna celebrate with?

thanks for your suggestions...

The league mandates the players all get to play at least 1/2 of a game.

AS far as getting the boys to play with the girls..the girls are definately more aggressive...as all of them have several years of soccer and baseball behind them.

I have coached alot before..mostly flag football, this is only my second go around as a basketball coach.

I have to pay for all the practice equipment. Practice jersys...Watercoolers...Even had to buy two balls (there goes my Gurkha sampler lol) as the league is completely ran off of the registration fees.
The parents of the players even had to pay to the names of the players put on the jerseys.

it still definately the most rewarding thing community-wise I have done...

(decided to smoke something nice...scrapped the Fumas..went for the Gurkha select)

Matt, just remember it's all about having fun at this age. It's also about them gaining confidence in themselves. Have fun and don't let the parents get too involved. That's what drove me out of coaching little league. F'ing parents thinking their kids are the next Michael Jordan or A-Rod.

I coached baseball for 5 years and had a blast with the kids. The most important thing to remember at that age groups is that the kids don't need a coach, the need a teacher. Teach them what they are doing wrong and how to do it right. If they learn the right way to do things from the start they will be much better off if they continue playing in years to come. Have fun with it bro and good luck on the season.
