I miss Papa Joe's in the Columbus area. Haven't had it for 10 years and I keep saying I'm going to detour through that area every trip south I take.

I have not had good pizza since i moved away from chicago. uno's has the best pizza. NY pizza is flat bread with katchup at least here in Allentown.
Ditto about the pizza in Allentown. I was back in town this weekend, great football game, awesome weather, and dinner at the federal grill to top it off.

THE PIE

Across the street from the University of Utah. I should know as I've eaten a few hundred of their pies :D

Pineapple?? Spinach?? on a pizza?? That should be against the law.
There is a hole in the wall joint in Roanoke run by 2 very nice Italian ladies that makes the best I'v ever had. Handmade crust in the shop, all the ingredients go on the crust raw, not precooked like in all the chains. Only to go as there isn't anyplace to sit. Yes, it's below the MD line but still great pizza. :p

You need a wood fired brick oven and at least 1 person who is first generation from Italy. Chains are a cruel joke. Owners names like Giovanni or Luigi are a bonus.

Corned Beef and Co. in downtown Roanoke has a wood fired brick oven and can make a good pie if somebody with a brain is doing the cooking. Some freakin yahoo made my pie last time .... I could have shot him. Ya know, dood, when it catches on fire you're a little late for takin it outta da oven.

Sals in Radford is excellent. My favorite is a la Monte with fresh basil, tomatos, garlic and huge chunks of fresh mozerella. Small family joint, first generation Italian with a Giovanni.

Edit ... "one person who are..." D'OH.

Damn.... this thread is 2 years old..... LOL

But, since ya asked..... Patsy's Pizza.... 117 St & 1 Ave (Harlem) been in business since 1936.... don't go to any other.... they are fakes

Sac's Pizza..... 30 St & Broadway (Astoria).... Brick oven, awesome.

My wife insists my homemade pizza is the best. She won't let us order out any more. Hand-tossed thin crust (no rolling pin!)...red wine sauce with a touch of balsamico...whatever toppings we feel like. Gen-u-wine eye-talian it ain't...but it's genuine PetersCreek.

Go to Lombardi's in Manhattan (32 Spring St.)and then you can say you've had the best pizza. Arturo's (106 West Houston St) would be my second choice. Although Pietro's on Walnut St in Philly was surprisingly good when I was there a few weeks ago.

Great googily moogily, is there a reason we're rekindling a two-year old thread about pizza? God, there's so many good mom and pop pizza joints I've been to over the years. Since, for some reason, Birmingham, Alabama has been on my mind of late, I remember some little joint in Homewood called Dave's Pizza. Used to have an all you can eat deal that, at lunch time, my buddy and I would hit and just about drive ol' Dave to tears with. But, it was some of the finest pizza we ever did have. Ever. Period. Any style you picked there, it'd be good.

Outside of that, here in Miami there's all kinds of great pizza joints, same goes for some of my haunts in Chicago, Jersey, NYC, and, you better believe, Boston. Can't even begin to make a list, but just figured I'd mention Dave's in B'Ham since my buddy and I were just talking about it. I remember a grade-A day would be Dave's for lunch, followed by a trip to visit Chip/Skip/Kip's whatever that Irishman's name was who ran the Briary in Homewood, back when it used to be in Brookwood mall, to visit his humidor and get some fine sticks, or various pipe tobacco concotions of the day. Mmmmmm. :D

Johnny's Pizza in Mt. Vernon, NY. Growing up my Uncle always used to order it as, "Pie with extra cheese/extra oil!" Mmmmm...

Here at school the best bet is Domino's (I like it with Pineapple and Ham  )

Back home, it would be Papa Tones in Brick, NJ. My personal favorite. Great crust and lots o' sauce. Generally I like anything with a hearty crust and more sauce than cheese.

MMMMMMMMMMM. My favorite too.

Place here in town called Barley's has one called the Hawaii Five-O.
They brew there own beer too. Happy hour is dollar-slice pizza and a bucket of beer for 5 bucks. I am not sure that Barley's is a chain. I've never seen one anywhere else.

I'll name a few in different parts of Florida:

Cassolas! on NW 17th Ave and approx. 26th St. in Miami.
---runner up is John the Baker on Pines and Flamingo in Pembroke Pines

Leonardo's on University and 12th St. in Gainesville (University of Florida).

Dal Italia on 58th St. and 9th Ave. in St.Petersburg
---runner up is Chicago Deli off of U.S. 19 in Clearwater

John's Pizza
Frazier PA

Rated top 10 Cheese steak in the Tri-state area 5 times in a row.
Rated top 10 Pizza in the Tri-state area 3 times in a row.

And best of all... right down the street is a good cigar shop.

Im with you there, its crazy to think anyone would ever order a chain pizza. Shameful and absolutely horrific. If any of you guys are ever in NYC look me up, i'll get get you the goods!

All NYer's should know John's on Bleeker is the best in NYC. Just do a google search. Patsy's in Brooklyn is second best to John's. John's was also the first brick oven in NYC in the early 1900's, I think. My friends and I drive in from LI every other week for a John's pie. I even get a pie to take home, it's just so good.

If you're in NYC go to John's in the village, you won't ever forget it. Bleeker, bet. 6th & 7th.
