About twice a year Home Depot runs a rare special - 40 lbs of Kingsford for $7.98. Yes, two 20 lb bags for only $7.98.

They haven't run this special for about a year now... Are there any good online sources for charcoal? If I see HD running this special again, I'm buying 20 bags this time.

Yeah, I'm sure there must be a place to buy in bulk.

I make a semi yearly trip to the outback, there is an aborigal tribe makes makes the best charcoal on earth, much better than the stuff I was getting Barbados. I pick up 4 or 5 bags everytime I go out there.

It makes the perfect barbi.

When I run out, I use kingsford from BJ's wholesale club and add wood chips You have to get the starter tower- NO lighterfluid.

I hate kingsford. Buy lump charcoal, like Cowboy from the same place.

I too have been looking for a place to buy it bulk.

Weird thing is, in recent years, it's been a more consistent leftover flooring charcoal, which is good, but recently, it's been big huge pieces, which work, but don't lend themselves to outting and relighting with additional charcoal.

They run that special a few times over the summer, normally Memorial Day and fourth of July, last year i bought 10 packs.

Rod,
I have been using mesquite pretty much exclusively lately.Except when I cook a turkey, the Kingsford is easier to measure.

I find the mesquite in the Mexican markets real cheap, like REAL cheap.
It takes a little getting used to but I am loving the results.

I know HD is doing a 2-for 5.99 deal Memorial Day. Not sure if they're still 20lb bags though.

Go with the wood Rod!

Cowboy is very good, can be a little ashy...but not too bad, and it burns well.

This is a great database.

If I can get bags of these...not bulk...I would get all I was able.
They used to have a supplier East of the Miss....but no longer :(

Ozark Oak!

Thanks for the excellent database link. I used to have a link to B&B Charcoal, but it appears they are not online anymore. :(

Wide open salmon bite this year.

I tried lump coal. What a PIA that was! Difficult to keep a steady temp, logs don't stack as easy. Eventually, I got it to work. I'm going back to Kingston briquettes.

Nimrod,
See if you can find Stubbs briquettes. They unlike Kingfords are an all natural charcoal briquette. Much better taste. I also struggled with temp contol with lump in by vertical smoker, but lobe the Stubbs briquettes. I get them @ lowes.

Is it an issue of balanced temp or consistent temps?

(I use a ceramic pot base wrapped in foil to help balance the temp.)
