On this day in 1945, at O530, the first Atomic bomb is exploded 120 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Residents were told that an ammo dump had exploded. With a 40,000 foot mushroom cloud, you gotta believe folks were pretty gullible. Things don't change much, I guess. The spot is marked with a lava stone obelisk. To this day, the radio activity at the sight is ten times higher than found in nature.

and three weeks later on 6 Aug 45 "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima after the Japanese government refused Truman's demand for surrender. "Fat Man" fell on Nagasaki three days later.
