Had my first box pressed cigar tonight. Oliva Series G. At first I found the shape a bit clumsy. But after a while I was kinda down with it. (Especially the square smoke rings :p ) Was wondering anybody's thoughts on this. Any preferrence? Does it matter it all? Just wondering. BTW, have a Rocky patel 1990 Torpedo thats also box pressed and I'm looking forward to that!

My reply has nothing to do with you post or box-pressed cigars. All I want to know is who is that in your sig tag!!!!!

I don't care for box pressed cigars. I take 'em out of the box, and put them in a humidor for a while, and they become round.

Doc.

I don't notice any real difference other than the way they feel when held or drawn upon. I suppose it boils down to personal preference. I don't have one...

I like them just fine. I don't really have a preference, but it doesn't bother me in the least.

I will have to say I prefer round cigars, but I will still buy a boxpress cigar. The boxpress will not stop me from buying some of my favorite brands (like VSG) but I think I would like them better if they were round.

I prefer round...

From the boxpressed I have tried so far, I prefer the torpedos, they seem to have a more natural feel in the mouth -- not quite as 'square' on the end.

I prefer round, although like many of you, box-pressed is still okay depending on the smoke!

Pressed is ok although extreme examples (LFD Factory Press I and II) are danged hard to mouth and tough to get a seal with your lips to draw efficiently.

Like Doc said, if you like 'em rounder, take them out of the box. In time you'll have aged, and rounded sticks. :)

Wilkey

I like em both ways but the larger ring guages in box press have an undesirable mouth feel to me.

Like most others here, I don't generally mind box pressed cigars, but do prefer the feel of rounds. The "harder" the press, the less comfortable the stick is for me, and it also tends to make it more difficult to manage the burn by rotating the cigar as I smoke it. I don't recall having smoked any pressed cigars over 50 or maybe 52 ring, as I don't like the feel of cigars any bigger than that anyway, but I can see how anything larger could be troubling.

A box press doesn't stop me from buying a cigar I like, and there are some that I buy many of (Padrons, VSGs). However, if the same cigar was available round I would likely buy it rather than the pressed.

One way of "depressing" these cigars may be to overhumidfy them for a short time. The VSGs at my B&M are in the wettest part of the humi and have to be dried out when I get them home (I just bought one the other day, and it literally fogged up the inside of the baggie), but they are much less square than when they arrived from the factory.
