As some of you may remember from my introductory post I grew up in Las Vegas. I used to get tickets to the golden gloves every year. I had the pleasure of having a neighbor who was like a grandfather to me who was a boxing enthusiast and he and I would go see the fights at the Showboat, Caesars Palace (where I saw Hagler vs Leonard live-Hagler got robbed LOL) and other venues. Roger Mayweather was a staple around the boxing community, and you used to see him standing outside all the time hamming it up. It was great, I had very bright red hair when I was young and I think it made me stand out a bit, every time I would see him, he would always acknowledge me, say hello and stuff. It was fun, good times, and I always have had a special fondness for the Mayweathers.
I became disenchanted with the sport of boxing when it got out of control, fights seemed to be fixed, judgements were questionable....Roy Jones Jr said it best once when he was anouncing, and to paraphrase he basically said that anytime you fight one of Don Kings fighters, its one of the only fights where you could knock the guy out..AND STILL LOSE!!
The icing on the cake for me was watching The De La Hoya Trinidad fight. I think this was something like 8 years ago. Having seen literally hundreds of boxing matches live, I was amazed. Many people didn't care for the fight. It didn't have huge knock out blows and pounding. The majority of the fans had no idea what a treat they were being given. It was IMHO the best, most technical showing of boxing I have ever seen. If you were ever going to sit down a young fighter and explain excellence in form and composure, this is surely the fight you would want them to watch. All the way up until the 11th round when Oscar started backing off and protecting his certain win. I didn't care for what he was doing, but couldn't disagree. Why let yourself get knocked out if you have basically landed almost twice the amount of punches as your opponent? Well, lo and behold, Trinidad, an excellent boxer in his own right won the decision. It was then that I could no longer seriously follow boxing.
I agree, Oscar is getting older, and has been beaten, mainly because after all of his success, boxing titles maybe weren't as valuable as they once were. Being a betting man, as much as I loved watching De La Hoya fight, I have to say that Mayweather is going to beat him convincingly.
Should be a good fight, can't wait to see it...on HBO
