I know I sound like a little kid, but I don't know what happened. I was playing golf this past Sunday and reached down to light up a stogie when I realized the lighter top wasn't opening. When I push the bar in on the side, it doesn't click and barely moves. the top slightly opens and I can hear the gas, but not the clicking sound it make when it's lighting. I've looked and can't find a number for repairs, but I've e-mail Dupont on Monday and still haven't heard back.

Has anyone ever had this happen, or had their Dupont serviced?

Mine will sometimes 'stick'. I can't push the bar and the top won't open. With a little patience and slight proding, it comes back.

Give it a good shake. I think on mine something got stuck. I've come to clean the top off regularly and that seems to help.

The repair center is in Rhode Island.

Oh - I also picked up an Extend leather case from a fella on CF...it's friggin' perfect!

Well, I got the repair center number after some googling under colibri. 800-551-1351

According to the repair center, there was a fire at the Dupont factory, and they are not doing any repairs on Duponts right now. They told me not to mail it and call back at the end of the month... ???

Dang!

Well....here's a thread on CF.

A couple folks mentioned compressed air/oil and banging! :whistling:

Sounds like a party!

If the bar clicks IN with no resiistence....then it's probably a mechanical problem(somethinsg broke).

If it doesn't push in....then it's probably just stuck...just tap the corner of it on your palm.

I notice this happens when I try to light it upside down(by accident)....after it was pushed when upside down, whatever saftey feature it has doesn't seem to reset easily.

We work on lighters all the time at The Outlaw, there might be something stuck inside, sometimes pocket fuzz and dirt can cause the flaps to stick or bind, you can remove the outer cover by taking out the screw in the bottom and carefully removing the outer case. Use some canned air to blow out the dust and dirt. If you dont feel comfortable taking it apart you could send it to the Outlaw and we could look at it for you for free.
Sending it to Colibri/Dupont can take a long time in certain cases, especially if the place burned up. If you would like us to look at it the addy's in my profile.

That's the problem.

I'll try taking it apart either at lunch or this afternoon. If I find myself over my head, there will be a dupont and a treat on it's way to you. Thanks for your help.

Try standing it upright and gently tapping the base a few times on something hard like a table. There is some mechanism in the x-tend that doesn't allow it to be used upside down. I tried it once upside down and in fact it would not work. The sidebar would not go in and obviously the trap door on top wouldn't open or light. When I turned it upright and tried again the door was stuck like before but after a gentle tap on the base, the sidebar went in and it ignited. It sounds like there is some sort of ball or bearing that slides back and forth freely when turned upside down/right side up that regulates the opening mechanism. A safety maybe? Maybe that mechanism is stuck and is the cause of your problem. Just a guess. Best of luck.

Don't mean to jack your thread, but that right there is pretty ironic... a fire at a lighter factory ???

My colibri also has a mechanism that prevents firing upside-down, perhaps this is stuck?

Too bad about the fire. I had sent mine in to the Rhode Island center a couple of years back and the service was outstanding. Quick turn around, no charge, and a friendly note asking that I not put inferior butane in my X-tend. Anyone know why the price has increased so much on these lighters? I seem to remember buying mine for $130-$135 at the ultimate tourist trap (CityWalk at Universal Orlando I believe).

I have an X-tend and if I try to lower the flame too much, it compresses the valve and releases all the butane=/ Another thing I don't like is after keeping it lit for 5-10 sec, upon re-lighting the flame doubles in size.

Anyone else have either of those issues?

I have searched with no luck, can anyone point me to a case for my Extend?

thanks

Funny you should say that because I dropped the lighter right before I was going to take the cover off, and now it's half ass working.

After taking the cover off I realized I'm going to have to take the top part off and clean the two little covers that cover the torch when it's not in use. How do I take that part off? Currently it'll fire up and the two little covers won't close after I am done with the lighter. I have click it a couple of times.

Just from memory, there should be a couple of roll pins holding the top part on.They come out with a gentle push from a small screwdriver or a paper clip.
I've seen this problem before and for the life of me cant remember the cure.
I believe theres a slider bar that causes the flaps to open and close, this is why turning it upside down sometimes alleviates the problem.

Again if you feel in over your head send it to me and I'll give it an "overhaul". Working on Colibri and Duponts is part of our everyday life.
