Budget rental cars is the state contracted provider for Mississippi. We received an e-mail today stating that as of Oct. 1st there will be a $250 fine for any vehicle not returned "smoke free".

I wonder what the criteria for "smoke free" is. My concern is that if I stop and have a cigar somewhere, get in my rental, and a faint smell of cigar is in the car after I return it. Then, they take advantage of the new rule and fine me. The simplest solution is to no use Budget, but I am obligated when on business to find the lowest price possible. Maybe, I'm just paranoid.

Fabreeze if you are concerned and charge it as a business expense!

Or just drive around with a skunk in the back seat!

We use some sort of spray we picked up at Home Depot...some 'orange' stuff...works like a charm.
I even use it at the vacation home.

Budget is my car dealer, more or less. They told me when I picked up my most recent one (about six weeks ago) that if I was a smoker I should get an older model. I said that I don't smoke cigarettes  and was on my way with my Sante Fe, 8 miles on the odometer. I'm going to turn it in today as I've put over 5k miles on it (and at least a dozen cigars in it) and they probably want to change the oil. I'll let you know what happens.

Budget is not the only one. I have had to get rental cars from Avis and Alamo recently and neither one of them allowed smoking.

I used to work for a company that had me living in Avis cars. They never had a problem with me smoking in them, and I rented from places in at least 10+ states. In fact, in one car I left a dime sized cigar burn (cherry fell out) on the seat and they never said a word.

What qualifications must you have or the of job title at car rental to go smell the car after someone is retuning it? :D  Better yet have sum taco bell release sum gas then have them smell it when you return the car  :D

I went to trade my SUV in for a different one, and it turns out the guy on the phone that said they had several available was just guessing... and wrongly. I picked it up with 8 miles and now it's at 5200 and change.

I recently used Zip Car and rented a 325i and that car reeked of ashtray and Viceroys. I made sure to smoke a Monte #2 in there before I was done with the car :whistling:
