Ladies and Gentlemen,

It will be obvious to many that I am new in the wonderful world of smokeable leaf. (Does a year make me an expert yet?)
My “FNGness” will be VERY obvious when I inform you that this is my first post, my first REAL post. My introduction, although technically a post, really didn’t count as a post because I was obliged to do it.

--A Black Hat once said to me, “Just because you show up to jump school, doesn’t make you a paratrooper.”

I digress…

After work yesterday I received via UPS my five stick pack of Torano Exodus 1959-Robusto. My first box press…I really, really loved the taste, (Medium bodied, Very smooth with toasty notes and a soft leathery finish, very aromatic) but it didn’t burn very well. …it kinda canoed and I had to “correct” the burn. Maybe a bad roll…I will try the others before I make a final decision. But wait… this is not a review. Sorry, I am ADHD.

…getting to the point... I got their (Famous Smoke Shop) catalog and in the back there are sections full of cigars-sold rather inexpensively, called many things: “fists, seconds, generic, value, house...etc.”

Questions:
1. Could someone please explain, or point me to a post that explains all the above terms.
2. I suppose I have been smoking mostly premium cigars. Am I missing out? (it is certainly expensive.) For an everyday, go to cigar I would like something similar to the ISOM Montecristo (I travel a lot). Wouldn’t we all? But what I mean is …similar in mild to medium body, slight hint of spice and nice leathery taste. Suggestions for “house” brands would be appreciated. (I did find a good little robusto down in Ybor after a “business conference.”)

Why all that typing just to get to the point? Actually I had some time this morning to type because I got up early. (Much earlier than usual. Went for a nice run and still had time to bang on the keyboard. I like the early morning hours best. Quiet, peaceful… ) I digress… Remember the “Apology” part in the subject of this post?

I apologize for asking the questions. I am sure I could find the answers buried in the deep, dark, and scary basement of the CP database. But the simple fact is, that I do not (normally) have the time. I don’t have the time to data mine all the wonderful and insightful pearls of wisdom you fine people have to offer. So, I will ask questions. I won’t be posting a lot either, unless I truly have something of value to say, at least for a while. Until I get the feel for the place.

I thank you for your support.

Sincerely… Cards&Gars

PS… Ginseng, that is the sexiest picture of a girl and a cigar that I have ever seen.

My house smoke is a Punch Rare Corojo. I've noticed great consistency in this great smoke and it shakes down to about $3 a stick. Lately I've been acquiring a vast variety of different sticks after joining this board so I haven't had to buy a box in a bit, but have been meaning to just so I can grab one whenever I feel like it.

Regarding seconds, I'm just a n00b, but I think you need to know why it's a second. RP has some pretty hardcore requirements and they bump any cigar to a second that has the slightest blemish on the label. You can pick them up for dirt cheap. Some guys I know that love the 90's (I'm not a big fan personally) keep the RP90 Seconds as their house. Seems to be a pretty consistent and great cigar to them.

I don't know what other kind of seconds are sold, but if it's something in the construction of the stick, I would personally pass.

Again, I'm a newbie, but that's my .02 and I find when I run my mouth and one of these experienced guys corrects me or agrees with me, I learn more.

So it's out there.

The Famous Smokeshop house brands and their "Value Line" cigars aren't bad for a working-out-in-the-yard type of cigar. I keep them on hand just for that task. They aren't exactly overflowing with flavor, but I enjoy them as decent cheap smoke.
