Charles (CRQuarto) posted a review of this cigar in which I commented on how I hadn’t had much luck with the C.A.O. Cameroon, so he sent me a couple (with a few tag-a-longs) to try. Much appreciate the generosity my friend! As mentioned, I’ve not had much luck with the regular C.A.O. Cameroon, so am looking forward to giving the l’anniversaire a go. The vitola is robusto and is sharply box pressed with a somewhat rounded cap. The Cameroon wrapper definitely looks to have a bit of age to it with not much by way of oil and is quite smooth even with veins running throughout. There’s a slight give in the body when squeezed and has a decent weight, maybe a little on the light side. I punch the cap and find the draw to have little resistance with a sweet, raisin like taste coming through.

With the foot torched and embers burning evenly, I take a good draw and a very good white pepper spice hits the back of the throat very nicely. The smoke, a good medium in body, is flowing effortlessly through the loose draw with a strong, sweet black coffee taste and undertones of cocoa, earth, worn leather, and faint dark roasted nuts. There’s also that sweet raisin flavor that I got in the pre-lit, cold draw.

The burn is good, getting only slightly sideways with a medium pale gray ash forming that is very firm and compact. Although I don’t see tooth in the Cameroon wrapper, it is quite noticeable in the ash. I find the looseness in the draw to actually fit the medium bodied smoke quite well, producing a perfect amount of smoke from each draw taken. The spice continues to be at the perfect amount with the same flavors as previously described. This is indeed a very good cigar.

I’m going to say somewhere around the halfway mark, the smoke evolved into a good full body that was quite strong. However, the smoke was smooth on the palate with the spiciness easing back just a tad. The finish had been somewhat short, being fairly rich with the initial exhaling through the mouth and nose, yet getting towards the end it began lasting more. I also started picking up what seemed like a very nice citrus zest. Very nice indeed! The last third of this cigar? Fantastic!

Might I give a sincere thanks to Charles (not sure if you go by that) for sending me the C.A.O. L’anniversaire Cameroon as I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar. Very good flavors right from the beginning with a spot on body and perfect burn. I’d say this cigar was rather complex and again, thoroughly enjoyable.

Been quite some time since I've smoked one of these but after that review I might have to pick a few up! Great review as always.

Great review Greg! I'm glad that you enjoyed the cigar, the pleasure was mine to finally PIF to someone. I really enjoy these cigars now that they have been sitting for a while, and I am saddened to say that out of the box, few remain. I will definitely be buying two, maybe even three of these once I have the humidor space...

The cocoa is definitely there, as well as the coffee (expresso for me), and I would agree that the flavors are very complex. This is a perfect example of the phrase, "Taste is subjective." I hope you enjoy the other sticks as much as this one! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to send you some cigars.

I am a big fan of these as well, just not a box press fan. The Rothschild was perfect. It was the only size in the line up that was 'Round". I say "was" because as of last year the Rothschild size is no longer being produced. I have 6 boxes to last me a while and these get better with age. :D
