Call up the big auction houses and see if they have an affiliate near you who can check it out for them. Spending a few grand to ship something that may get you over $500K doesn't seem like a big deal.
We called up Christies in regards to my grandmother's whale oil lamp collection. They sent a rep out to look at it personally and the value was much less then you are talking about. That was in '98 so maybe they don't do that any longer but it wouldn't hurt to find out.
