Why is it that when I click on the Live Chat Room button, all I get is a blank screen with the little "x" up in the top left corner, as if it's a picture I can't see?

Try reinstalling Flash, or if you're using Firefox and the Flashbloxk extension, add the URL to you allow filter.

I got in last night using Firefox 1.0.6 and things seemed to work just fine. In addition to Flash, you could try re-installing Java (I believe the chat window is a Java app). Get it here:
