Cigar Database - 30 minutes in access, do you like it?

exactly.. they will be hardcoded and assigned to an autonumber so that you can build your own queries for reporting and all that nice lovely MS Access jazz..

The downside, you will have to have a version of Office that includes MS Access. I am not really a developer, just a hack, and don't have access or know how to use a dev pack that will build the necessities into it as an exe.

Also, it'll probably be an ongoing thing so updates will not be easy..

This is for me, but I'm willing to share if you forgive the fact that I'm not a developer.

In the past, I've tried to use databases (Cigar Briefcase and Excel), but could never stick with it. Just too much work/hassle.

Question: Will this db include self-populating fields? For example, if you select "Hemingway Signature" from a drop down menu, will the cigar's specifics (ring gauge, length, country of origin, etc.) auto populate? That would be very cool and make it easier to use.

I would absolutely LOVE to be able to provide that function.. This is why I posted in another post information on cigar databases that might be floating around in someone's hard drive. As long as I have a spreadsheet that's formatted somewhat, or even better an access or sql database, I could easily import these and make them automatically populating for any cigar that is in the database..

Its easy, just getting the data itself is going to be hard.

Haha, I can make it prettier later.. But not much prettier..

I'm doing it so that I can track what I have in stock, what I've smoked, if I have more of them, what I like, etc.. I'm a newb, so I've got lots of ones or twos and no way of really remembering the details about something that I smoked unless it was less than a week ago.

Thios probably isn't for an FOG who knows what he likes and keeps mostly those in stock. This is for people who have a ton of everything.

It looks good to me for what your trying to do. There's really no need to get all "fancy" with it, unless you want to. I wouldn't mind having a copy of the file once you get it a little more complete for my own experimental reasons.

Anthony, I want to do this, but I'm still unsure of how to go about it.. My main goal was to keep the entries limited down so there isn't an entry for every cigar, instead an entry for every brand/style of cigar. I'm still trying to come up with a way that can at the same time keep track of multiples of the same brand and specific details about each without being overly complex and excrutiating to update.

Well, i'd love to but I'm not a web developer, I'm an html hack that can make a rpetty webpage, but i don't know jack about how to hook up a database to a web page.

That's pretty impressive for someone that's not a software developer.

Ask around, if not in this forum, then look elsewhere. That's a good looking database in the making, keep at it...well done.
