Family trip to BisMan, NoDak and was excited to hit up the first and only cigar lounge in all of North Dakota. Big Stick Cigar Lounge in "legendary" downtown Mandan (actually more infamous as the badlands in the region 😅). This would be my second public lounge ever and after an outstanding experience at my first I was hopeful.

Nice space, small, cozy and well appointed as a prohibition 1920’s style speakeasy. Well stocked bar with a bit of everything (except a decent tawny port 😩). Nice walk-in but the hygrometer showed 73rh 😒 and selection was pathetic to say the least. Lots of flavored sticks and bottom shelf gar-bage. The only boxes that would even be smokeable were Padron 3K ($18) & 4K ($25) or Ashton VSG Tres Mystique ($18) & Pegasus ($20).

Asked if I could smoke my own - emphatic NO. WTF?!

Figured the Peg was mis-marked as everything else I recognized was 2-3X srp. VSG were once a favorite and I smoked a ton of them fresh back in the early days when they were first released.

Bought an ounce of McCallan 15 Double Oak for $40 (am I at a high roller bar in Vegas?!) and sank my fat ass in to a comfy leather couch. Tempted to lift the band off the VSG and stealthily light up one of my own but thought better of it. As ridiculous as their policy is I should respect their rules. So Pegasus it is.

Clearly well constructed and under the nose the cold aroma was familiar if distant (been more than 20 years since I smoked any VSG). Sungrown wrappers were my first love and they are still so aesthetically pleasing. V-Cut and used their wood matches to toast the foot and fire her up. It’s been a long while since I smoked indoors and it’s so nice to be out of the wind and use matches instead of the ubiquitous torch.

Whelp, the damn thing is clearly too wet (picked the driest one I could) but started off ok. Plenty of smoke, lots of pepper, full strength & full flavored. After the first inch and a half it starts to canoe on me and does so until I put the poor thing out of its misery. Fun! Had to repeatedly touch it up the rest of the way. It’s just ok. Not terrible, not great. Maybe because it’s too wet? Maybe too young? Maybe I just don’t fully enjoy NCs anymore? Maybe my dank attitude towards their forcing me to smoke something I don’t want to biased my taste buds? At least the Scotch was tasty if overpowered by this full strength cigar.

I was planning on smoking there on at least on 2 occasions if not more. Was even going to take my wife for a smoke and drink but it ended up being one a done. Such a bummer. I understand they need to make a profit. I ran my own retail shop for almost 30 years and I want to support their business. But why not offer a cutting fee or drink minimum or bar tab minimum or if you buy one of their sticks you can smoke your own as well? Am I off here? I mean their huge markup on everything would support these more patron friendly policies surely?

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk 🤓

How disappointing. If they don’t keep them a little drier for immediate smoking, that’s not good. Sorry to hear that, not a fun experience. :(

At the price of the hooch you bought i would have had no qualms about swapping out yours w theirs. I had a similar experience at Ashton in philly two months ago. Paid like $13 or $15, I can't recall, for a vsg and it was a constant battle to keep it lit. It was only $10 for bushmills on the rocks so I felt it evened out.

Going next week and taking my own. I emailed them about byoc and they never responded. Since last time I bought in the shop downstairs and no one cared or checked when i went upstairs I assume it's cool. Now the local lounge doesn't sell booze and I wouldn't do that.

Next time id bring something middle of the road that they should have in stock then buy and do the switcheroo when it's time to blaze. I was in a walk in today that felt very damp. I almost never buy stuff from a b&m and go straight to smoking...even mail-order. Above mentioned lounge is the exception.

Most lounges have a "No outside cigar" policy, at least in theory. And I 100% understand it. My issue is your issue; B&M walk-ins are just not calibrated for my desired smoking experience.

I have never once had an issue smoking what I bring with me, 99% of the time I buy more than I smoke anyway.
I will say, I never ask permission, and if I was shut down, it would be my last visit to the store.
I would not get angry, I would just leave

I understand the rule about not smoking your own if you just come in and do only that, but if you buy an overpriced cigar and/or drink (or both) from them, I don't see why there should be any issue.

There aren't any lounges around me anyway, so it's not a concern, but if I were to visit one I think @MX's approach is the one I would take.

Wrote my post for me. If I'm buying food and drink, and a couple from their humidor....smoking something in better condition RH wise that you brought with you doesn't seem to be a problem. One man's opinion....

Or maybe keep their humidor at a reasonable rh?

As I read you referring to smoking VSGs many moons ago, I couldn't help but think about the box of original release vsg torpedoes I got from you many many years ago! @jfields John and I still talk, to this day, about how awesome those cigars were!

Those OR VSGs Rounds were incredible. I smoked through a few boxes of the 10 counts. Hindsight being what it is, I wish I would have kept a box. Definitely in my Top 5.

Sorry to hear about your experience @lucasbuck Craig. How were you dressed? I mean, you were in NoDak so I'm assuming you were wearing Carhartt overalls with a flannel and your beard nicely trimmed :) Seriously though, I can't imagine they're selling a lot of cigars or drinks at those prices. I've never sat in a lounge and smoked. Not that I'm opposed to it, I just never make it a point to do so.

Always makes me smile how much you guys enjoyed those. So much better than if I had smoked them myself. And if we should ever meet I just might have a treat for you 🤤

Believe me I was not underdressed for this Midwest Carhartt crowd 😆
This place was hopping all night. I must have seen them ring a couple grand in just the hour and a half I was in the joint. I don’t get it. A bunch of people came in just to buy cigars and leave! Crazy. So tempted to open my own lounge here in Grand Forks but it’s a lot of coin. I could do it so much better.

When I used to travel all over the country for work, I popped into lounges in many different places. My first intention was to always purchase something from the shop to smoke on-site, but if they didn't have anything I particularly wanted I asked on more than one occasion "if I purchase a cigar from you, would it be ok to smoke a different one I brought with me instead?". Got charged a cutting fee a few times (which I didn't object to) but was never flat-out told "no".

Thanks for sharing your experience Eric. I should have just lit up my own cigar after dropping $80 at high margin and a very generous tip. If the joint wasn’t 4 hours away I would have negotiated harder. Probably shouldn’t have asked at all but I’m dumb that way.

Nothing wrong with you asking, it was their answer that was the problem. I don't understand why would you chase away a paying customer?

IF you ever happen to be in there again:

Order your drink from the bar (but before you pay for it), ask if you can smoke your own cigar, after purchasing cigars from their humidor.
Let their answer be the deciding factor on how bad you really want that drink.

They have the right to refuse service
You have the right to reject
