Cigars in Macau

I wonder if anyone has experience buying cigars in Macau?

I understand there is a duty-free shop in the Gongbei border crossing between PRC Zhuhai and Macau SAR, but am wondering if there is a nicer place inside Macau itself to buy them.

There doesn't seem to be a La Case del Habano there, but if there is something comparable that someone knows about, it would save me a lot of time and money versus having to go to Kowloon.

Thanks!

MJS

P.S. I hope this doesn't run afoul of the no-sources rule, since I'm just looking for somewhere I can walk into and buy them, no mail-order or shipping involved, and they aren't going into the US.

I'm not so sure that you have violated the "no sources" rule. I have heard others talk about where to buy Habanos at a B&M in other countries. Only problem would be if you are a US Citizen, then of course you would be breaking the law and in violation of the goods embargo with Cuba...

Sorry that I can't help you with what you are looking for. I did want to suggest that you check out the "Introduce yourself" thread and go ahead and introduce yourself to the community. That way we can all get to know one and other a little better.

Good luck on your travels! and welcome to CP...

There is ONE cigar concession BETWEEN the Chinese (at Shenzen) and Hong Kong immigration at Lowu crossing point that sells a small but nice selection of smokes whose products are supplied by PCC (official Habanos sole agent in Asia)

In Macau itself.....(this is a cut and paste from a similar post and my reply in CF)

"Try the Macau Tower.....really cool place like Toronto's CN tower.

Other great places to smoke would be

1. Senado Square at one of the cafes

2. across the Macau Tower at the other end of the Sai Van lake along Avenida da Republica there is a strip of very small establishments with lots of outdoor seatings

3. In the grounds of St Dominic's church....BEAUTIFUL

4. Oriental Mandarin Hotel .... Bar Nova Guia has a cigar lounge ... pretty OK food, band, very comfortable

5. one of the higher end naughty saunas

6. Cross the border into Zhuhai for even more options....

7. from HK, u can buy a 1 day 'package' deal for Macau at the HK Ferry terminal before boarding that includes price of a ferry ticket round trip, use of the sauna and a nice massage ... dont be shy about approaching the counter to buy the package.... departures from HK every hour 24hrs daily

8. Lisboa Hotel and Casino is one of the oldest casino hotels .... good ambience.... go down to the basement level...good place to smoke and watch major eye candy "

The Sand's Venetian in Macau is already open and has a very very VERY nice lounge for smoking.

I notice that you're in Guanzhou ! Excellent!!! We should get together when I'm there or nearby in a month or 2 !!

Very nice info edng.

CP is truly an international cigar board.

On a side note...I was in Macau in 1984, went over from Hong Kong with the Hydrafoil. We visited the main casino which was an eye opener.

Now that the Chinese have taken over Macau they have done a deal with a Las Vegas company to build major casinos. Compared to the run down
casino I visited, I think Macau will be unrecognizable in the near future.

Thanks! Great info!

I'll be going to Shenzhen in the near future (to buy cigars and pipe tobacco) and am weighing a side trip into Hong Kong, depends what I find in Shenzhen though.

On the off chance anyone is looking for cigars in Shenzhen in the future, I found a pretty good cigar and pipe tobacco store in Shenzhen on the bottom floor of the MixC Mall, which is across the street from one of the metro stations, I believe Da Ju Yuan, not too many stops from Luohu if I remember right. The store's name escapes me but the prices are half decent and the sticks all seemed legit, very suavely put together place.

It isn't far from the Leonidas Belgian chocolate shop, which has stratospherically high quality chocolates and has proven a tempting accompaniment to the cigars and tinned tobaccos (Dunhill, GL Pease, Mac Baren, others) that they sell.

I have never had much luck in Zhuhai, which is otherwise a very nice and beautiful city, and was told by some people who live there that the best option is just to go into Macau and buy from the duty free in the Gongbei border crossing. I'll be going to Macau in the imminent future and will report all noteworthy cigar commerce when I return.

On the topic of Macau, there was an article today in the New York Times about it, remarking on its grown and how it has surpassed the Vegas strip and is on track to surpass all of Nevada in the near future I haven't had a chance to read the whole thing but seems interesting. Four or five months ago in the Atlantic magazine there was a pretty detailed article on the history of the place and the changes that have been happening the last few years. May be available online, in any event worth a read.

Edng,
I don't live in Guangzhou itself, rather in a city that isn't too far away, but would be more than willing to travel a bit to meet you if you're in the neighborhood!

Macau has its own character that is very different from Vegas.... it does not have the overall 'bright bling bling' of Vegas. I actually enjoy Macau for its quaint neighborhoods..... try walking from St Paul's through Senado through St Dominic's all the way to Ah Ma Temple.... with a double corona in hand ..... its surreal.

Please do tell me you are near or in Dongguan district...... I'd certainly love to meet up when I'm in that neck of the woods in a couple of months time

I live in the city of Jiangmen, which is a mere hop across the delta from Dongguan- one I'd be happy to take if you're in town.

Jiangmen has its own very quaint (and really very beautiful) old section of town along one stretch of the river that I enjoy ambling through quite a bit, I will definitely take your advice on Macau.

Go to Wynn resort. The asia distributors sells cigars there. Their shop is right inside the Wynn signature store. After shopping for cigars, go to the cigar lounge in Galaxy 16th floor and enjoy you cigar. Their drinks are cheap and they enviroment is pretty good. Let me know if you want to know more about macau.

Thanks!

I'm going to be spending a couple days there during the Chinese New Year, with a friend who knows the place well and has some cool stuff planned out for our group (nothing too dirty, I gather, as we will have female friends with us).

It costs me about $10 USD round-trip to take a day trip to Macau though, so if the Wynn cigar prices aren't outrageous, that may well become my primary supplier :D

By all means though, let me know if there are any must-see things in Macau, it is so easy for me to go there that I'd be thrilled to check out all of them. I understand it is also a good place to indulge in my other great vice...

Port ;)

Macau is basically a place for food and something you have already mentioned. Besides some of the heritage that you might want to take a look, you also might want to stroll around the casino's. Althought the casino's are better in Las Vegas, there is never that many people in Vegas comparing it to Macau. The old town in Taipa is also worth visiting. You can find some decent Macanise food there. Go to the Venetian, they have some nice pubs, but its a little bit expensive. I still prefer Galaxy cause the drinks are cheap.

About cigars, PM me.

Thought I would chime back in here with an after-action report.

Both the Wynn and the Mandarin Oriental had cigar shops, I preferred the Mando's because it was a little bit cheaper (I think) and just enjoyed the Mandarin Oriental more in general.

The Mandarin Oriental's concierge got us a last-minute reservation for dinner at a wonderful little restaurant on the inner harbor called A Lorcha, excellent food, vinho verde and port, but sadly the place did not allow smoking.

Bummed around Taipa for a day, had dinner at Fernando's restaurant in Coloane, magnificent roasted suckling pig, everything was delicious. I really liked Coloane a lot.

Good cigar selections at both the Wynn and Mando, actually bought an Ashton VSG torpedo at the Wynn for the heck of it, hadn't had one in a long long time. Definitely a different animal from Cuban stuff.

Can't recommend Macau enough, truly top notch place for food, cigars easily had, obviously other diversions for people who are so inclined.

glad to hear that you liked Macau !!!

will be seeing you soon in a month or two around guanzhou !
