Cigars Shops, Open Boxes For Single Sticks & Smoking Permitted

Just wondering what your thoughts are about cigar shops that allow smoking in the humidor area where open boxes (single cigars) are kept. There are quite a few shops in Florida that have open boxes and allows customers to smoke around them. I find it odd especially with the humidity down here and when I buy single sticks I don't know if it's just me or do they taste a little off?

I went to a cigar event a few months back and there had to of been about 30 people puffing on Ashton cigars in the store. I decided I wasn't going to buy anymore sticks from that store.

What's your thoughts? Does your shop allow it?

I agree 100%. The smoke penetrates the cigars and they taste like stale smoke.
 
One of the worst things a cigar shop can do IMO (along with a 75-80% running humidor). A huge turn off for me and like yourself, I wouldn't buy a single cigar but I would mention it to the owner in case he's unaware of the damage it could do. If it is one of your locals and you have a relationship with the owners, might be a good idea to let them know.

Stores been open for about 6 years.. Hate the guy, only go by there when I run out and he's the closest to my spot (sorry if i sound like a jerk, but he's near a bunch of "lady" clubs i visit) and it would mean driving 15 miles to the next closest store.

If I said anything, it wouldn't do any good. He's the biggest moron in our area and somehow he gets all the good sticks.

If you're talking about who I think you are from another one of your posts...The ownership alone would keep me out of that store, though I did wonder about him lighting up with all of those boxes on the shelves which got me thinking to the establishment practices.

I'd skip out and bring your bucks elsewhere.


You're really looking for support to NEVER visit this store again aren't you. :) Ultimately it's going to come down to your self control. You've already gotten plenty of people's opinions and advice which seems to be what you were looking for in the other post. If something is rubbing you wrong about where you visit and get your sticks, it's you that has to deal with it if you don't like it, just take your business elsewhere.

My Local B+M is down the freeway from me a good 10 miles. There are local shops, but I refuse to visit them because they are to fine tobacco, what 7-11 is to fine cuisine.

I would think it really depends on the type of ventilation they have in the store. A guy close to my work in Downtown Miami allows smoking in his shop and his cigars taste great.

The local store near my school, The Wharf, allows smoking inside. The cigars are all in humidors lining the place, but it gets extremely smoky in there with 10+ people puffing away.

Cigars taste great and I have not noticed any negative issues from it. There aren't to many places in Ohio where one can smoke inside, and I enjoy going in from time to time with the laptop to shoot the shit.

They do have an industrial grade air purifier, so I'm sure that helps.
 
Theres a store around here kinda like this. Its not that they smoke in the humidor...just the whole store must be a humidor! The odd part is I don't recall ever seeing a humidification system in the store anywhere, yet they have unopened boxes all over the store, and singles under the counter (not sure if they are completely encased in glass or not).

I've yet to buy anything from there.

Unrelated I stopped at a liquor store on the way home last night to inquire about my favorite beverage and also because they had a humidor there and I have yet to visit it. So I walk into the humidor, and the first thing I notice are the Acid cigars. This doesn't surprise me though. I keep looking and I see some Diamond Crown Maximus, AF 858 and sun growns, and I'm thinking ok ok getting better. I continue to look and see some Padron anniversarys and I'm ok cool and then I see some of those CAO Italias and what not.

I look down and theres about 20 cases of GUM in the humidor. WTF? I mean isn't it bad enough to have some Acids and Helix's and what not mixed in with some decent cigars....but gum? Who puts packs of gum in their humidor??

Then he didn't have the vodka I wanted anyways, so I bolted. The wrappers on the padrons were looking frayed abit, and 858...well I didn't have the best feeling about what one might try to call plume on one of them.

I find it irritating that one would go through the time of constructing a nice looking humidor only to fill it with gum. I'll forgive him the helix and other Acid and flavored cohibas...though they should have been grouped away from the good stuff...some people actually do buy that stuff. I can't look past the gum sitting directly below and beside the CAO and AF sun growns.

...mmmm this 858 has a sweet hint of orange trident! yum! :whistling:
 
I know I'm no expert on this topic but when I go into the shops on Calle Ocho here in Miami where they roll most of my favorites there is plenty of smoking going on. I'm talking Pepin, Padilla, El Credito etc....

It's funny you say that because I'm sure there are plenty of torcedors(cuban, dominican, nicaraguan, honduran, etc.) that smoke a lot of cigars while they're working.

Nevertheless, my local B&M owner allows customers to smoke in his humidor but I never do and I honestly can't say that I've ever seen anyone else smoking in there either.
 
I've never thought about it. Usually these walk in humidors are very well ventilated. Most of the B&M's I can think of around here allow it save for one that has a fairly small humidor. From what I can remember, and I could be mistaken about this, but I'm pretty sure the guys at Holt's light up in their humidor and they've been around forever and that humidor is one of the biggest with the most prized gems in it! Granted their facility is pretty high-end with a ton of ventilation.
 
Maybe I don't get it. Why would you be in the walk-in while you're smoking? If you're already smoking...do you really need to pick out another? Granted I'm all for "geeping"(sp) but if I light a cigar up, I'd like to sit down, relax, and shoot the sh*t. Maybe I'm wrong...

I was assuming we were discussing a store that is humidified, not a store that has a seperate walk in humidor. Mike's cigars and Absolute cigars which are my two local B&M's have their stores humidified and allow smoking. Both places have good ventilation. Like I said most of the cigar factories that sell cigars out of the factories and roll allow smoking in the actual place. So while you may want a store to be picky about the smoke after the cigar has been packaged, don't think that the cigars have not had their fare share of exposure to smoke while being rolled and stored till shipping.
 
I would assume that the rollers are not smoking vanilla flavored tatianas and lemon acids though. ;)

And if these humidors/shops are ventilated, wouldn't it be hard to have a controlled environment of humidity?

I rarely see customers smoking in the B&M humidors around here, it's mostly the people working there. Holt's will have anywhere from 3-6 people working inside the humidor at any given time. The shops closer to me in the burbs it's usually just one guy, but he'll walk in with cigar in hand after I walk in to talk to me about what he's got in, coming in, recommendations, etc.

I don't know, I just never really thought about it and certainly haven't noticed any difference in taste.
