Coffee & Cigars

I think I mentioned it in the thread I linked to in my previous post, but you should also definitely give Baby's coffee a try. I think there a few other brothers here who can attest to how mighty damn fine it is.

Their Hemingway, Havana, Cuban and Fausto's are all amazing...but then, all their coffee roasts really are (and there's no shortage to try)...

Baby's Coffee

I told my big sister to check out that place next time she's in the Keys, looks pretty neat. They're seem to be a shortage of small batch roasters in the Miami area given its size and all..

Baby's roasting house is actually right here in Miami Beach, and there's a couple of places locally that you can pick it up as well (most notably Compass Market). But, ordering it directly from them is amazing and it's actually roasted to/upon order.

Mr J's "Nicaraguan Knife Fight" is one of my favorite blends. Favorite AM cigars (today) in no particular order are:

- Padron '64 Principe
- Cohiba Siglo I
- LaLuna Serie R Colada
- Tat. "Bombazo"

One of the things I look forward to all week is Sunday AM. My dear wife goes into work very early, so it's me and four little dogs, on the deck, watching the sun come up with a good fresh cup of coffee and a wonderful smoke, listening to the neighborhood wake up and start into Sunday. A really quiet, special time......

Cheers, Gents - B.B.S.

It's always amazing how those times can be BBS. I do the same thing here on the beach, watching the sun come up over the Atlantic, or whereever I may happen to be at.

As for the coffee...well, as with some other threads here, I typically prefer cuban cafe. I posted a recipie for what I make here, along with some recommendations for coffee:

Perfect settings guys  . Mine is on Thursday afternoons after work sitting in the backyard on my favorite antique park bench from Agnews State Hospital (remember agnews MC? ). I'll put on some Blues music, brew up a batch of Cuban Coffee and enjoy a Habano cigar. Rain or shine I'm parked on my bench enjoying the sunset, roses, and my beautiful green lawn. It also gives me a chance to visit with the dog's, contemplate life and reset my attitude.

A couple of other coffees that I've been enjoying lately are:
Santa Barbara Roasting Company - State Street Blend
Barefoot Coffee Roasters - Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Adado Moje Natural Reserve

Agnews Insane Asylum....God do I ever remember that place. Zanker Road, right? We used to sneak into it when I was much younger and just generally....well, do all manner of things. I'm surprised it's still standing...it's been "condemned" for decades now. Although, I recall reading/hearing somewhere that the State has sold the property to Sun.

I woulda figured you for a Peet's Coffee guy, or at least a Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company guy.
Mmmm...I love LGCR. Used to ride my Vespas, Lambrettas, and later, bikes there almost daily.

Yup, Agnews is gone and a nice new Sun campus is in its place, I believe they may have kept a few of the old buildings and refurbished them but I'm not sure. My Dad found one of the park benches at a garage sale, refurbished it, and gave it to be a few years back as a B-day present. Very cool artifact and discussion starter.

Damn, I really do like Peets coffee and I do drink it regularly but Barefoot is a fairly new operation in Cupertino near my work and they do some fantastic special roasts. The owner is a cool Santa Cruz type dude and is really into his coffee, check out the website.

BTW, Peets seems to be giving Starbucks a run for their money around these parts latlely, you wouldn't believe all of the Peet's coffee houses poping up all over the place. The really do have much better coffee than Starbucks I believe.

Peet's is way better than Starbucks. But, also, I regard Starbucks as swill anyway. There are a ton of great little coffee shops around those parts. And that bench from Agnews....wow brother...talk about a piece of history.

Those who have been to Woodbadge will understand.

1. Use #10 can with bail

2. Fill 4/5 full with water

3. Add 1 handfull of coffee on top of cold water.

4. Set can over a wood fire and bring to a boil.

5. When 1st boil is detected, remove from fire and allow boiling to subside. Face North, and yell "ONE".

6. Place can on fire again and when 2nd boil is detected remove immediately from fire allowing boil to subside. Face South and yell,"TWO".

7. Place can on the fire again. When 3rd boil is detected, remove from fire allowing the boil to subside. Face East and yell, "THREE".

8. Then take a hickory stick which has been charred in the fire and stir the coffee four times in a clock-wise direction if in the Northern Hemisphere face West and yell, "four".

9. Then take 1/2 cup of cold water and sprinkle over the coffee to begin to settle the grounds.

10. Take the Can by the bail. Turning it from foot to head once in a clock-wise direction and once in an counter-wise direction. This completes the ground settling process.

11. You now have the perfect cup of coffee.

Doc.

My perfect day would begin with a nice hot cup of Magnum Organic Nicaraguan Tress Volcano, or Kick Ass Cafe (Kona Hawaiian), or D'Aquino Organic Espresso with a Graycliff Profesionale Pirate.

I've done the same only in my helmet. The days of the steel pot are long gone but damn, they were useful!

If you've never tried it, I highly recommend Ethiopian coffee. Ethiopia is a magnificent country that is truly misunderstood by many. I backpacked North, East and West of the capital some years ago and was just blown away. Three things that left a life long impression on me: the people, the rock churches, and the coffee. Hard to explain, but like Cuba, the soil and conditions are just perfect for it.

That's the same way that I make Greek coffee (which you non-Greeks know as Turkish coffee), come to think of it, I think I'll have some right now.

:)

It really strikes me how similar coffee cultures are - it's a great drink. If any of you want a good recipe for Greek coffee, give me a PM and I'll dig up the appropriate link...
