Guys, I had some serious computer issues today that will be really limiting my online time over the course of the next few days, maybe even the whole week. I seem to have something wrong with one of my hard drives, and so far the problem isn't fixed and I think that I've lost all of my info that I didn't have backed up. :angry2:

Reason I'm posting this is because I have a few trades in process with people, as well as a few of you have ordered Jerky etc. So if you send me a pm or something and I don't respond right away, this is why. I will still be able to check my pm's etc from a friends computer, just not as often.

But everyone that has ordered anything from me is still accounted for and I will be shipping a bunch of stuff out tomorrow. I will also try and get all those sticks out to the troops tomorrow or tuesday

Sorry to hear about the hard drive. I just had a rather expensive SCSI drive die on me. My cigars for the troopswent out yesterday,so hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday they will be at your door step.

Sorry to hear the bad news HB... hopefully you can recover everything. :)

Sorry to here about the problems Hillbilly. :(

One word of advice, if you are using one computer for both surfing the internet and your business...

Buy a tape-drive and a good back-up software and do nightly backups. It will pay for itself the first time you need an important file and its no longer there.

A raid 1 mirror set-up would also give you a bit of file security but isn't as important as the tape drive.

I'm the head of a IT department, PM me if you need any recommendations or futher advice of the right set-up for your company.

Shawn

What type of drive Emo? I might have a spare laying around...

I tend to collect hardware like some of you guys collect cigars lol

thanks shawn, I just think there is a defect in one of my hard drives. I'm currently running the Raid 0 set up and have to 80gig Seagate Hard drives. I think it may have gotten damaged when it was shipped to me or something. Still sucks though.

I had an 10k 18G IBM Deskstar UW SCSI. I was going to buy a 10k Cheetah also and start messing around with Raid to kinda teach myself by doing. Currently I have a couple of old 5G SCSI drives, but they arent UW compatable. Right now I am forced into being the IT guy on my ship, but really all I am is a "Super User".

Raid 0 = bad news. The performance boost isn't worth the extra risk. Redo your PC and convert it to Raid 1.

If one drive goes out you dont lose your data with Raid 1, if Raid 0 (and 0 really isnt Raid BTW) goes out for any reason including a short power outage your screwed.

Hey HillBilly,

I'm w/ Wurm on this one. RAID 0 should never had the RAID categorization, IMO; it confuses too many people. RAID 1 is a pretty good and cheap option these days. ATA disks are cheap for the space. And my Motherboard has IDE RAID support built right in; so I have 2 160 GB drives in a RAID 1 configuration. I have moved all critical, or important data to me over there and left the OS to sit alone on an 80 GB drive. I put Game data and such over there.

Here is a pretty inexpensive option for the Home Business user:
http://www.yosemitetech.com/products/desktop/desktop.htm

You can probably find it cheaper somewhere else than thier website. It supports BU to CD/DVD, USB drives, disk or tape. HP used to give it away when you purchased a standalone tape drive; I'm not sure if they still do or not. But if that won't work, or whatever, I might be able to find an NFR copy of something to get you by. I don't have any spare tape drives though.

But that is what I do, IT consulting on data storage, backup, and business continuity. If you have any questions, shoot. But I definitely recommend implementing some form of Backup.

And I have a legal copy of Veritas Back-up exec I'd being willing to trade for some Jerky and a few Smokes lol

But it only works with 2000 and 2003 server so I guess its a bit too much for you :)

thanks for the advice guys. I was actually considering buying another 80 gig, so I'd have 3 and run the RAID 5 option.

Not sure yet. I definitely need to get it up and running soon.

 So how did you hook it up?

lol you know if you do... then you have to reformat again. So don't go installing alot of software just yet.

I have a U160 Mylex Acceleraid 170 raid card with 64meg cache that I can let go for something reasonable. PM if you could use it.
