First, TIA

I am trying to copy my mp3 files off my 60gig portable HD and I keep getting an error that says

Can not copy file. Path is to deep

What the hell does that mean, and can it be fixed....

Using windows xp MCE

Tim

You might have luck copying the files to an intermediate point, then to where you want them to be.

IE:
If you're trying to copy from:
H:/PortableHD/MP3/ or C:/Documents and Settings/MX/My Documents/My Music/MP3/The Ramones/Album Name
The latter 'path' might be too long to handle, try copying it to c:/mp3 THEN to where you want the files to go.

Holler if that doesn't work?

What mysterea said..
It sounds like you are trying to copy the file "britney_spears_nude_fun_bath_sextoy_hot_shower_xxxnudesxxx"
from a long folder hierarchy, into an even longer pathname
or something..

I know exactly what the problem is. Windows can only support (I believe) 200 characters in a path; ie: c:\mp'3\etc\etc\etc\etc\etc\etc. Sounds like you have been super picky in organizing your MP3's. You need to shorten up the paths, to something like c:\mp3\jazz, c:\mp3\alternative, etc... You have directories going way too deep. Make sense?

I believe that's old school..XP is "The path statement length limit is 1024 characters, 2048 in SP2."

edit - the filename is up to 260 (I believe)

edit edit...friggin MS : the answer to the path - Linky - the boss was right(ok - close)! :D

edit:
Try using xcopy rather than Windows! - did you try this?

i didn't name any of the files. They were downloaded off my army work server while we were deployed. Thanks for the help I will try and rename them and see what happens

After mulling over your problem a bit I realized I had a similar problem relating to files that had odd characters in thier file names..
Watch for funky (non alpha - numeric characters) as well. I recall having some trouble moving them around. Eventually just deleted them.

It has nothing to do with filename length.

It's probably:
1) Bad cable.
2) Bad HDD (run extensive error checking... might have bad sectors also)
3) HD may be formatted in FAT32. Your partitions on your desktop are NTFS. While this shouldn't be an issue, many times whan transfering large amounts of data over USB devices, I've seen this error pop up.
4) Corrupted data.

Thanks for all the help. I think that jlada hit the nail on the head.
I pulled as much as I could, deleted, and reformated the drive.

No offense, but that error message indicates that jlada is probably way off the mark. I think the advice to shorten your pathnames is probably on target.
