Computer Problems....

So 2 days ago the internet stopped working on my comp. I figured comcast just went out for a day but the next day I found out everyone elses in the house is working. Sooo, here's the deal. My comp says i'm connected. And getting a signal. When I try and open a webpage, it goes straight to the "no internet" or whatever it says. It does it on firefox and IE. Now i'm pretty good with computers but I cant figure this one out. I'm thinking my wireless card is dead. But who knows...

Does your machine have a regular Ethernet port instead of just wireless? Try to connect that way to rule out a possible software issue and not necessarily the wireless.

If you haven't tried restarting the PC do that. Are you the only one on the wireless router? Have you restared the router? Of course if other computers are using the wireless and working it's your computer. If restarting didn't/doesn't work then I would suspect either a virus or hardware failure.

I have not tried usiong the ethernet I don't have an outlet in my house. Router is upstairs in the other part of the house. I rent out the bottom level. It has been restarted as well as my computer... No virus.

Try updating the drivers for the wireless card. If that doesn't work, I would suggest calling the tech support for the card. It might be a common problem with the model you have and they may have a fix. If no luck there, buy a new card and if the internet works, problem solved. If it doesn't work just return the card and get your money back. Good luck!

Yeah thats pretty much what ive decided to do. I'll try and find someone to call tomorrow. If not then i'll be off to the store. I'll post an update tomorrow...

Do you have any wireless security enabled on your router? (WEP, WAP, etc.) Also, does it say you are fully connected, or does it say you have "Limited or no connectivity"? Let me know about those two and we can go from there.

Good signal but no connectivity usually means that there has been security added. Maybe check the router for WEP/WPA as suggested or possibly MAC filtering which is what I use :whistling:

It seems you are on the network, but are not getting through the switch/router to the modem then to the ISP.

A simple fix is turn off everything, then specifically bring the network up first (e.g. power on the wifi router/switch). Then plug in the ISP provided modem.

If the above power cycling does not fix the issues use the command window to issue the command "ping www.yahoo.com". If this works you have a browser problem.

Do the above and reply to the board for the next step

Click on START, then in RUN type CMD. This will bring up a DOS / Command window. Type PING www.google.com and see if you get four line saying REPLY FROM yada yada yada. If you do get four replys, the computer is connected to the internet and something is wrong with your browsers. If not, let me know and there are other test to run to see where the breakdown is.

just try rebooting your router by umplugging the power for 10 seconds, mine needs a kick every now and again....if you didn't change any router security settings, it should return to normal.

Alright I forgot to get back with an update. After doing everything you guys had said, nothing worked still. Even had a programmer I work with try it out. Ended up reinstalling windows and reformatting the hd to NTFS instead of FAT32 cause my laptop came that way which was retarded. Anyways, the full restore worked and everything is fine. No idea what would have caused it, but it finally works!

bfisher, if thats the case you most likely had some wonky/corrupted nic card drivers. If the symptoms reoccur at some point open up the case and move the nic card over to another slot. Windows will then reinstall the drivers.
