Hi all:

In light of the Katarina auctions, there seems to be a lot of interest from anonymous and guest users lately. I'm not too sure that this is a good thing because of the legality on trading Cuban origin products. I know that the Katarina auctions are for a good cause and that publicity is good for it, but I think some restraint should be shown here (restraint on telling people, not on the amount you bid). Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but I can imagine that in our interest to spread the word, this gets to a journalist and in turn grabs the attention of US Customs. Normally, I'm not too concerned about the many trades and buys that happens, but with some of the AMAZING sticks and the amount that the bids have escalated to, I'm getting worried. I certainly don't want to see the good intentions of many of the folks in this board turn into a nightmare, not to mention, for the board itself.

What do you all think? Should I be concerned? I'm not trying to discourage the auctions, but my mind keeps going back to the first rule of Fight Club and the long standing policy of discussing vendors out in the open. This seems to fall into the same category especially because of value of these lots. Perhaps we need to come up with aliases for these sticks or find a better way to keep the details out of the public view. Maybe Rod can lock the thread down to registered members only and also lock the profiles from anonymous and guest users.

I absolutely worry about long-term ramifications of these sales, as I've participated in other boards that caught the attention of WSJ reporters, who are notorious for grabbing story ideas from online forums. Do NOT be surprised if a reporter starts trying to contact participants. And if they do, we've got a problem. Both customs AND the IRS would be interested in what's going on here. I say let's get it done and then get rid of the threads, hopefully before anyone notices what's happening. It IS for a very good cause, but it's NOT unlikely that some overpaid, underworked US beauraucrat would pursue if he/she knew about the activity.

In the big picture... we're all small fish, if fish at all. There are bigger and better targets to go after than us. However, that's not to say research isn't being done on these sites. That's why we have rules in place re: open vendor discussions. Those are the bigger and better targets that "they" (whoever that might be) are looking to get.

Think of it this way... we're undercover moles.

i think you guys are being a bit silly. i think it would be one thing if large quantities of cubans were being sold for profit, but that is very far from what is taking place.
