I wrote this up for our company web forums, but I figured people here who have a Mac might be interested as well, since I'm using it to print Priority Mail package labels for sending out cigars. :) See also: Cigar Shipping 101: info & materials

Ambrosia's free EasyEnvelopes widget for MacOS X 10.4 or later is a handy little program for quickly printing envelopes. But it can also do more, such as printing to a custom "envelope" size for printing, say, Priority Mail shipping labels.

Here's a mini-tutorial on how to set up a custom envelope size to print Priority Mail shipping labels; the same idea can be extended to other kinds of custom envelope/label printing as well.

Note: You only have to do the setup listed here once, after that you can just re-use the custom paper size you've created any time you want to print Priority Mail labels.

1) Invoke Dashboard, and bring up the EasyEnvelopes widget, then click on the (i) button in the lower-right corner of the window to configure the widget:

2) Click on the envelope icon labeled Change Envelope Size...

3) From the Paper Size: popup menu, choose Manage Custom Sizes...

4) Here is where we'll do the bulk of the work. Click on the + button in the lower-left corner of the Custom Page Sizes window, and a new custom paper sized named Untitled will be created.

Click on the "Untitled" paper size and change the name to: Priority Mail Labels, then next to Page Size: enter 4.00 in for Width, and 5.25 in for Height. This may seem "backwards" but because we're feeding the label into the printer rotated, we swap the Height and Width here.

Next under Printer Margins: enter them as follows: Top: 1.00 in, Bottom: 0.00 in, Left: 0.00 in, Right: 1.25 in, and you should have something that looks like this:

Note that again because the paper orientation is flipped, adjusting the Right margin will move the address down on the page. Similarly, adjusting the Top margin will move the address to the right.

Click on the OK button to save the custom paper size.

5) Next from the Page Setup window, choose our Priority Mail Labels custom paper size we just created from the Paper Size: popup menu, and make sure the Orientation is set to the middle Landscape icon as shown:

Click on the OK button to save our settings.

6) Now flip EasyEnvelopes widget back over by clicking on the Done button, find an address by searching for an address (EasyEnvelopes automatically uses the addresses in your AddressBook) or type one in manually, and click on the Print stamp icon:

7) Feed the Priority Mail labels into your printer's envelope feed with the blue "Priority Mail" logo facing left, and you'll get a nice printed Priority Mail label:

The same technique can be used for any kind of custom envelope/label you choose. The key is making sure you adjust the Margins properly based on the rotated orientation of the envelope/label you're printing to.

Enjoy...
