Customs duties on cigars

Hey,

I just have a quick question! Have any of you Canadians (from Ontario, particularly) purchased cigars online and had to pay customs duties? Any information would be helpful. I'm not so interested in finding a reputable source right now, because if you have to pay the nico-nazi tax, it doesn't make sense to order them to begin with.

And just out of curiousity, how does it work for you Americans. I know it differs state to state, but does your customs open up all international packages?

Thanks!

Yes and sometimes.....

I haven't been dinged ........... yet.

The most expensive package I've received to date from a B&M is $95 US.

I do have a good friend who works in Customs at the Border between Windsor and Detroit and she told me the Duties and Taxes amount to roughly 300%.

I'm in Ontario and I've orderd 5 different boxes of cigars online from different sources. Never been dinged yet. <knock on wood>

you WILL get nailed if you order from an online store. and it is between 220%-250% taxable (spend 100$, pay $250 in taxes), no shit.

Best bet is to buy off an American whos willing to send to you personally. This way he can tamper the value, and contents description.

Good luck

Depends on who you order from. Some companies just don’t wanna deal with the paperwork/cost so they are creative when shipping..

If you personally talk to them, and get them to make the value under $20, and label it as a gift, you may be able to avoid it. But large companies like Holts and JR wont be willing to do that, as it is illegal and it could be bad for their buisness.

Obviosly not with ISOMs, but when I order anything from CI, the customs label that they put on it to ship to my APO always says "monthly literature".

I have never been "dinged" with duties, but I always declare my purchases to the legally required Provincial and Federal authorities and pay the resulting duty :sign:

j/k...haven't paid a cent yet to those bloodsuckers

In Finland, if a package from outside the EU contains more than 10 cigars, you will have to pay 11 euros, I think, per additional cigar after the limit. That's about 13-14 USD, PER CIGAR! That's what the customs think of as the average price for a cigar. Plus you pay a certain percentage on this as VAT. Yep, the Finnish customs don't like cigarsmokers :(
