Safety charged with assault, battery

Associated Press

MIAMI -- Washington Redskins free safety Sean Taylor was released on $16,500 bond after he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

Taylor, 22, turned himself in to Miami-Dade County police Saturday and was released later that night, Miami-Dade corrections spokeswoman Janelle Hall said Sunday. Since Taylor was set free, the Miami-Dade County clerk's office will set an arraignment date later.

Taylor was accompanied by defense attorney Fred Moldovan when he surrendered on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and simple battery, police said.

According to a police statement, Taylor pointed a gun at an unidentified person Wednesday during a dispute over two all-terrain vehicles he claimed were stolen. Taylor left the scene but returned about 10 minutes later and punched one person.

Another man, Charles Elwood Caughman, threatened and chased another victim with a baseball bat, police said. Caughman, 19, was arrested later that day and charged with aggravated assault.

Police said the Redskins have cooperated during the investigation.

"The representatives for Taylor are keeping us informed as to the developments," Redskins spokesman Karl Swanson said.

Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, didn't return phone messages left at his office Saturday and Sunday. Moldovan didn't immediately return a call to his answering service for comment Sunday.

Taylor, who wants a new contract, has been working out in Miami despite pleas from Redskins coach Joe Gibbs to join the team in voluntary workouts at their home base in suburban Washington. He signed a seven-year, $18 million deal as the No. 5 overall draft pick in the 2004 draft.

The former Miami Hurricanes standout has had a tempestuous start to his NFL career.

He has fired two agents, was fined for skipping one day of the NFL's mandatory rookie symposium and was accused of spitting on a player during a game at Cincinnati, although he wasn't punished because the league said there was no video evidence.

He was also charged with drunken driving in October, when he was pulled over at 2:45 a.m. after attending a birthday party for receiver Rod Gardner. Those charges were dismissed in January.

In his rookie season, Taylor had 89 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and one sack and started 13 games.

This guy needs to take a long, hard look at his life. However I don't think he's the type given to introspection. Release him back to the wild. We in the civilized world are tired of his antics.

me too, which is why I posted this.

Joe Gibbs needs to tell Snyder it's time to cut our losses and move on.

this kinda stuff seems to happen with people who played in Miami all the time

This kind of stuff USED to happen to players from Miami all the time. The program has cleaned up considerably since the Jimmie Johnson and Dennis Erickson eras. This article has a nice long list of schools with arrests happening to their players. I guess people are still pissy about Miami winning all those national titles huh? Hell Ohio State and Colorado are worse by far. It's just that when a player from Miami does it, he's usually a really good player.

So in response, no, this kind of stuff does NOT happen to Miami players ALL the time.

Unfortunaltey ricman your article only references players that are still in college, while Matty talks of former Miamians gone pro.

I dont' care either way, but you could argue that the staff at Miami are better at covering up while the kids are in school; once they go pro they are on their own and more prone to getting caught.

(Just fuel for the fire )

yes the Redskins trade him to the Raiders for some lethargic septegenarian Defensive back with a record longer than Dennis Rodman...

I expect Washington will keep him.
On the field, he is an impact player.
Off the field, I expect Gibbs to keep him on a short leash.
That is if he does not land in jail for being stupid.
