Dell and the U.S. Products and Safety Commission plan to recall 4.1 million notebook batteries on Tuesday, a company representative confirmed Monday.

The recall affects certain Inspiron, Latitude and Precision mobile workstation units shipped between April 2004 and July 18, 2006. Sony manufactured the batteries that are being recalled, the representative said.

Customers will be able to go to a Dell Web site to determine if they need a new battery. Dell has faced several issues this year related to exploding or flaming notebooks, and wants to ensure the safety of its customers, the representative said. The 4.1 million units is a subset of the 22 million units shipped during that time frame, he said.

Too late for one guy I work with in Atlanta.

We shitcanned lithium batteries in the early 80's in submarines. It seems they don't tolerate barometric changes very well. Explode isn't the right word but burn vigorously works. Fire + submarine = really bad.

I had this same problem with my old Inspiron 5000 that I bought in 1999. They ended up replacing the battery I had and sent me an extra for the trouble. I bet they wont do that this time.

We've got three of their laptops at work and it looks as if we dodged the bullet on them. Of course one of them needs to go in for service (a shitty mail in service that takes a few weeks). At least it isn't MY laptop, though! HA HA!
