Direct Tv or Dish Network?

I've been wanting a DVR (Tivo) for some time now. The only bad thing is that I don't want to pay retail for the damn $400 device. SO, I'm debating on which of the 2 is the best? Have any suggestions. I originally wanted Direct Tv b/c I had a few friends that could program the cards, but that's not possible anymore.......or at least that I know of. So, back to my question....what do you guys recommend?

From what I understand, DirecTV has far better sports programming, with all their tv deals. But Dish is cheaper, considering they give you a DVR for free, at least they do in Houston. Hope that helps :)
 
I've had Directv since the day they came out. Dish is cheaper but from what I've seen only a few bucks a month (I have 3 recievers). Plus HDTV Directv products are easier to find with more brands/features. Dish does have an edge in international if you want to see original programs in Russian, German etc. etc..
 
I have been very happy with Directv ever since I gave them a call. I have the High Def programming and reciever and could not be happier.

Now if the would just add more high def channels :angry:

Once you have seen high def in your living room on a big screen tv you are ruined for all other programming and you find yourself watching the stupidest programs just to watch the high def :D
 
Well, having used both of them, and having very simple programming needs, I'd go Dish. Mainly because it has the best interface of the two, I really enjoy using it. I just didn't like the interface DTV had to offer, too many things that were a hassle to me.
 
I use to have Direct TV but I have had DishNet for 8 years since I started selling it.


If you are big into Sports Packages go with Direct.........Other wise, Its just TV and they are both better than cable.

I know this guy who knows someone's step brother who knows this old guy who makes them work with all the bells and whistles.......... :p

Cool. My brothers friends sister in laws landlords roommates uncle :p used to do it, but can't anymore since DTV came out w/ the new cards. If/when I get mine hooked up, maybe we can do a little trade? I for some reason am drawn to the 590 and above channels :D

My rabbit ears work pretty good. One of these days, I'm gonna get me one of them there antennas that goes on the ROOF!!

How's THAT for hi-tech?

I may even spring for a rotor ;)

I heard there are such channels as UHF, anyone ever heard of those?

My television only gets channels 2 - 13 and only half of them even come in :p

Beats listening to the AM radio ;)
 
I have had Direct TV since they first came out as well. My First generation reviever was $800 and a steal at that considering the hassle and expense of a full size sat at the time. I loved mine from the first day I got it.

I got a Tivo reciever a couple years ago and love it as well. It was so new at the time I got it I couldn't even activate it for like a month after Christmas. I have trouble even imagining TV without Tivo now. Since I've had it for a while now I only have like 20 hours of recording. I do have a set top DVD recorder though so I can copy Movies and tv shows off to DVD with perfect quality. Now unless Im going to be gone for a week or something my Tivo hard drive space really isn't an issue anymore. I have a first generation Tivo unit and some clame the video quality on them is slightly better due to less copy protection encoding. The second generation Tivo's have networking features and such built in though.

Toaster is the guy to talk to if your interested in all the fun stuff with these things.

I have no real experience with Dish network, but I absolutly love my Directv tivo.

Wow CC - your in the next century... I ahve a TV with no channels and a DVD player. Movies are great, but TV rots yer brain, don't ya know.
 
I have had both Dish and Direct...both go out in the rain and t-storms..don't have Tivo...only watch 4 channels of the few hundred available but they won't sell me just the 4 I watch.

Anyway...go with DriectTV...better value

Yea, I love this feature. I find myself going to do something for 20 minutes if I happen to catch a show right at the biginning just so when I come back I can fast forward through the commercials. Plus it's great when friends are talking about funny commercials they've seen recently and I have no idea what they are talking about. :thumbs:
 
I had a stand alone Tivo unit when I was on cable. Fore reasons too long to explain here AT&T (now Comcast) p|ssed me off badly enough I went to satellite.

This area is serviced by Pegasus for Direct TV, and they should be charged with racketeering for the way they charge considerably more to customers in their areas than Direct TV customers pay in DTV serviced areas. I went with Dish.

Having owned both a Tivo and a Dish PVR I can tell you that the Dish units are total POS's compared to Tivo. For Tivo alone I would go with DirecTV as long as you are in an area serviced by Direct TV - they really are that much better. The tivo utilizes a relational database and search agent to track the shows you set up timers for. The dish PVR is only slightly more advanced than a VCR.

I agree with Wildcard.
Dish has a better interface imo.
I been using dish from day one and i'm happy with it. :)
 
If you get TIVO you'll never use another interface ever again. It blows away Dish/DTV/Cable by a mile. Plus the obvious advantages of a the PVR.

Speaking of Direct Tv...anyone else experience frequent "lost singals" due to rain? Anyoen know of a solution to reduce this problem?

Move to Arizona ?? Change the physical properties of nature ??

It's not just durring rain storms, mine is actually right before a rain storm a lot of times. The issue is how much water is in the atmosphere between your dish and the satelites. Were I live it doesn't come up more then like 2, 3, maybe 4 times a year and even then it's just for a few minutes right before or right at the biginning of a storm. Once the initial front moves through and the rain slacks off a bit all is cool again.

My XM radio doesn't have this problem, but then it's only recieving audio and not the huge torrents of data that video requires.
