Ok so I will be celebrating my 1st year anniversary this coming weekend and we've decided to head to Napa for a nice get away.

I was wondering what is the drive like on the 1 vs. 101 vs 5? I've taken the 5 many times to the Bay Area...so I know how long that will take me, but not familiar with the other routes.

Also can anyone recommend non-expensive wine tours or romantic things to do while in Napa?
 
Get reservations and have dinner at the French Laundry. One of the best resturaunts in the world!! Its pricey but worth every penny just as the experience is. It is in Yountville. The wife and I eat there every year we visit napa..
 
I just traveled up the 1 and the 101 about a month ago. In my opinion, and this is how I did it, I took the 1 to the 101 up (with the 101 being the majority of the trip) because I wanted to get to Monterey faster. The wifey got a little taste of the 1 going up, and tnen I shot over to the 101. The 101 has some very nice views for driving through the mountains, whereas the 1 is right next to the coastline.

I took the 1 all the way back and lost about an hour and 45 minutes on travel time, which was fine for me because I had some beautiful scenery to check out. The downfall of the 1 is that for approx. 2 hours, you can't pass anyone in the winding roads, and if you're being a jerkoff renting an RV for his family vacation and he doesn't know how to handle it above 20 MPH, you're pretty much screwed for 2 hours.


I would take the 101 up to Napa, then the 1 back down. That way you get to your destination spot quicker, and then have a longer drive looking at the scenery coming back down. Just my .02 cents. Good luck!

Color me impressed (seriously). But if he is going up this weekend no way he gets reservations (they are booked solid at all times 90 days in advance for dinners). Check out Cyrus in healdsburg for an alternative that is a little easier to get into (albeit not a 3 star michelin restaurant). If you end up in Marin let me know.

Hey I have family in Novato, do you know the name of this place just north of Novato where they make and sell cheese and fresh bread? Growing up my cousin and I use to ride our bikes there and buy some fresh bread and cheese and eat by a pond.

Yes you are correct. I guess I took it for granted as the wife generally makes the reservations. Personally speaking there is no better 3-4 day escape than Napa. A short drive to see the redwoods, and a trip along the coast. We love it. And its the only place I know of that you can drink wine before 11 AM and people dont think your an alcoholic!! :laugh:
Yountville has so many great resturaunts that you could not go wrong with any of them. The French Laundry just has a little bit of sentimental value to us, and is the reason we make it a point to go every year. That, and who wants to spend all summer in Houston when it is 100 degrees and 90% humidity..

If you want to go just head into Novato and take Novato Blvd until it dead ends, then go left. You can't miss it.
