Over the years I have had several of my dogs get hot spots. I usualy catch it early with my labs being short haired and easy to spot. (though I once had one go undetected too long that was on the underside of her neck) Our Golden had one once also and by the time we realized it we had to get her to a vet for treatment. It had become infected and her long hair covered the area so we didn't notice it right away.
If you catch it before infection sets in you can treat it yourself. Hot spots look worse than what they are and most people are afraid to treat it without some reassurance from their vet. If you're not the squimish type and feel capable most can save the expense of a vet trip and the "doggie" perscribed medicine. With that said, I highly recommend going to your vet if you have any doubt.
Most cases can be cleared in a few weeks or less and noticiable improvement should be seen within the first 3 to 5 days. If not...go to the vet. Shave the area and keep it clean. I take a small bowl of water and lightly wash the area. Sponge hydrogen peroxide over the area real good. Allow the area to become completly dry and then cover with an antibacterial oitment. I've used neosporin with good success. Do this at least twice a day. Three times is better but not necessary.
Another thing that helps is applying some hydrocortizone. I have found it in spray form though its most common in an oitment. The spray makes it easier to apply. Apply it after the peroxide has dried. This helps keep the dog from scratching. I use the 1/2% hydrocortizone but have used the 1% also. Both are available over the counter.
One last thing, make sure you're feeding your dog healthy. I feel its important to have your dogs food meat based. Chicken, beef, Lamb, etc. I do not recommend grain based dog food. (Corn etc) Check the first thing listed on the ingredients of your dogs food. Good read about this topic

Disclaimer: The above is my own experiences with my dogs. I am not a vet and any treatment suggested is what I have found to work with my dogs. YMMV If in doubt, consult your Vet.
PS -
but the vet's meds only work half way. I've looked at a couple of special shampoos and I'm currently trying an oatmeal based one.
If the Vets meds are not working and you have been applying the meds
as directedyou should return to the vet and discuss. Buying special shampoos could actually be adding to the problem.
