I read somewhere that in the early 1990's the Fuente family tried to grow cuban seed wrapper in the DR...was it a success, and is there anything in the way of a Dominican "puro" as a result of this?

Yes... the Opus X... first crop in 1992 (thus the year on each box), initially available for sale in late 1995

LFD also has a Dominican puro that they came out with in to celebrate their 10th anniversary, the LG Diez,

In addition, the La Aurora 100 Anos from the Miami Cigar Co. uses a Dominican Wrapper and it, I believe, a Dominican puro. The Ramon Allones cigar from General Cigar also uses a Dominican grown wrapper, but I don't believe it is a puro.

Never smoked a LG Diez. How do they compare to the Opus?

They are good smokes in their own right, though somewhat strong and unrefined... I have a cab stashed away, I think with a few years of age on 'em, they are going to have mellowed and married into something spectacular...

In terms of taste, there are some very tenuous similarities... but they are more different than similar, IMHO.

Yep, the 100 Anos is a Dominican puro as well...

I smoked a couple of the La Flor Diez and was not impressed. They have no where near the nose of an Opus, and none of the spice.

The Anos had more spice than the Diez, but not the flavor and nose of an Opus.

The RA original release from General actually had the most nose and spice of any dominican wrapped cigar. They however use a conn braodleaf binder with nic filler which makes it a non puros.
