I was given this cigar by Stogie13 when I was herfing with him and Jon recently. I've yet to have this particular cigar out of the DPG line, so I have to thank Stogie13 for the opportunity to try something new!
I've had a few different cigars from the DPG line such as the Blue label and Cuban Classic, and both were full bodied spice bombs in typical Pepin fashion. I always say this, but I feel that I cannot stress enough that there is a level of quality that one expects from anything Pepin creates. His cigars are always top notch, and I have yet to have any that are sub-par or less than wonderful.
Pre-Light
The customary pre-light inspection proved my point in terms of the construction being superior. The only flaw I could find was that the foot appeared to be bunched a little on the loose side, which was a strange contrast to the hefty weight felt in the hand. On gently squeezing the cigar along its length, there was a good springy feel that gave me confidence that it was not under nor overfilled. The wrapper was a slightly oily beautiful chocolate brown, silky soft to the touch and smelled wonderfully of milk chocolate.
Burn & Draw
On clipping the head I found the cold draw to be perfect, carrying the taste of good, sweet tobacco. On toasting the foot, the smoke tickled the nose with pepper and a sweetness that made me sneeze. The burn was a bit wild, requiring touch ups throughout the smoke, and it revealed a mottled white and gray ash that held strong until let go every half inch. I did have to purge and relight a few times as it seemed like the filler and binder were burning faster than the wrapper, which gave me the indication that I may have not let it rest long enough.
Flavor Profile
The flavor profile of this cigar can best be described as "solid", in that the flavors I found were very prominent, and very static. From the start there was a huge black pepper blast that quickly subsided to a good, enjoyable level and was complimented nicely by mix of milk chocolate, sweet maduro tobacco, and a bit of coriander. Like many others, I prefer complex, evolving smokes, but sometimes I do enjoy a straightforward, in your face spice bomb.
Overall Impression
I enjoyed this cigar greatly; it delivered exactly what I needed today, which was a full power, full flavored no nonsense smoke. The finish was a mile long, and I found myself able to just relax, savor the cigar and not have to worry about concentrating too much on picking out flavors and subtleties. Paired with a cup coffee, this is a perfect late afternoon cigar with the size providing a good hour and a half of smoking time. My girlfriend Deanna was next to me savoring her birthday smoke that Bo gave her, a Camacho Triple Maduro (her favorite next to the Mx2 Box Press), and I really enjoyed just sitting and smoking fine cigars in tandem with her. I would definitely buy this cigar, and found it to certainly be one of the better out of the DPG line I have had so far.
