"The bill that passed the House five months ago would have exempted casinos, bingo halls, horse tracks, cigar bars and smoke shops from the ban. The Senate stripped those provisions in favor of banning smoking in all workplaces -- though American Indian casinos likely would be exempt because many state laws don't apply there because of tribal sovereignty. "

Unreal. Can't even smoke in cigar shops once this hits. I'm up here right now and my customers are up in arms to say the least.

Haven't you heard? Tobacco is the Devils work! The Government knows what's best for us, and just want to keep us healthy. ???

I have never been in a smoking lounge where there was lingering smoke, and I've never encountered anyone in one that was the least bit offended by my cigar. What's next? The government will soon pass laws prohibiting smoking in internet chat rooms?

Saw the title of this thread, and thought I had slept through football season, and missed Ohio State beating Michigan, again! :D

....just like it is in Washington state. Oh, the Indian casino's will get a pass on this one, make no mistake about it....just like in Washington.

Sorry to hear, brother - B.B.S.

Hopefully Texas will be the last to go. I can still smoke at some places when I go out to eat. It just sucks that cigars have to be associated with cigarettes in terms of health ramifications.

If I get one of those tribal symbol tatoos on my arm, do you think I could slide in under the tribal sovereignity clause?

In all seriousness, that is just about the biggest crock of excrement I know of. The same thing here in Iowa only it doesn't simply pertain to Indian casinos. You can smoke in any casino. So that fact tells me that it is about financial contributions and not the health concerns for people.

Smoking bans are a fact of life now, but to ban smoking in establishments that exist exclusively for smokers is just crazy. It's not going to stop anyone from smoking, it's just going to make it more attractive for us to buy online. How much money will the state get from that?

This friggin' sucks!! I hope Scott says FU to this and lets us smoke in the lounge anyway. It's just a small shop.

I have been following this and think that it is bullshit. I was planning on opening a Cigar Lounge but it looks like I wont.

COME ON PEOPLE quit electing these guys in, more and more of my rights are being taken away.

Edited to fix a stupid mistake!!!

Well I stopped by thr local shop after work yesterday because Christian Eiroa from Camacho was supposed to be there. I got there earlier, but I could only stay a few minutes, and missed meeting him because he was running late....apparantly promoting the gig on the radio.

At any rate, the talk was about this, and some were saying they were going to march on Lansing, the state capital, today in protest.

I hope this doesn't pass, but our wonderful governor, who couldn't find her way out of a paper bag with openings at both ends, has stated she will sign any bill for no public smoking. Great. So now that I am officially into this, all the great places I hoped to smoke at I won't be able to. The cigar lounge at the shop right down the street, the other one I frequented yesterday, the place at Comerica Park, the cigar lounge at the Troy Marriot out in front of Don Shulas steakhouse...nothing.

Thanks graholm, just adding it to the list of reasons to leave michigan. I'm sure she will double our gas tax soon enough, because they can't figure out how to balance the budget. Out of money? Tax the citizens more. Slowly but surely our state is turning into a empty wasteland.

Anyone want to talk about the mayor of detroit? heh.

Ditto from Ohio, we went smoke free 1 year ago. The funny thing was there were two smoking issues on last years state ballot. One (issue 4 I believe) was to ban smoking in all public places (which passed). The second (issue 5) banned smoking in restaurants and public places, but allowed smoking in bars, private clubs and bowling alleys after 10:00pm. The funny thing was that if both issues passed 5 would have been the one enforced.

The way it stands now, you can smoke in no bar or restaurants. To do so results in fines. Some local governments have complained because they are being mandated to enforce a law that they had not budgeted for (gas and OT for inspectors).

I can understand not smoking in a restaurant, but bars and private clubs (FOP's, VFW's, AL's) is ludicirios. Add that to the fact that common sense should rule the day, if you want to be a smoking a establishment post a sign and the consumer can choose to enter or not enter as they please.

P.S. In Ohio were are too stupid to allow gambling, unless you count the state lotto and the new Keno system that Governer wants

Your post for some reason reminded me of toronto. I was there for a work a couple years back and recalled everyplace on the main strip was no smoking. Except one little bar in Eaton Centre (shopping mall) that permitted smoking. It was on the second level I think or the third, and I think it was in area that it was the only place accessible from that particular escalator. And I think they had a sign stating you could smoke in there.

I wonder why that place was so different than the rest?
