So, I just moved to a new apartment and am trying to find a resonable high speed internet provider. Right now I have used my "special skills" to "aquire" some wireless, but I don't want to do this forever.

My main question is, what is the cheapest way to go here. I don't need home phone, as I use my cell for everything. Also I don't want cable, since I don't watch that much tv. What is there for me to do here.

I know that Verizon is offering "naked DSL", but only to the northeastern US, and that doesn't help me out. Any ideas?

What kind of phone do have? Motorola has "Phone Tools" which allows me to access the internet using my Razr as a wireless modem.

You don't need a phone for DSL but you DO need a phone line.
Is it cheaper not to have the extra phone line or can it be done
without the phone line, is a good question.

I have DSL through Qwest without a home phone service package. They require that I get at least one of the mid level speed plans, not the cheapest, but it's been working great for more than 6 months now.

Youi can get a cable modem without cable and can get DSL without phone service. You just need the copper from either service.

I called ATT and they said I had to have phone service as well. I figure that if I can get service without a phone number it will cost more than the 17.99 deal. I will have to investigate.

Rumor has it that Clearwire works like a cell phone and therefore doesn't require a phone line..anyone know anything about this service or it thats true?

I checked and yes, you must have dial tone on the copper to get DSL. Standard practice to disconnect phone service is to break the copper at the nearest junction box. No wire, no DSL.

When I was in College we had Time Warner Roadrunner DSL with no phone service or cable for $35 a month. Check with them.

That's through Time Warner cable I'm betting. You can't have DSL w/ out a lan line. It's like asking if you can have Dial-up w/out the lan line.

If you are looking for DSL sans a phone line there is one company that does it and it is called speakeasy.net. They call the service OneLink and i think there is an upcharge of 7 or 8 bucks from their normal DSL rates to get it. The nice thing is you can get a bundle which will include voip, and they offer free calling to 22 nations. I do not work for them, but this is the setup i run at my house and it has always been solid for me.

Here is the URL to there offering, not as cheap as verizone or sbc type dsl, but it is really a different product.

Tony,

I have DSL through the Baby Huey Bell, aka SBC/AT&T. I too wanted DSL only, but was told it was a no go. I think you are screwed unless you like jacked WiFi from the amazing humping upstairs neighbors!

Regardless if it's Voice Over IP, you still need a dedicated line.

"OneLink uses the phone line running into your house and connects to your existing phone jack—no phone service is necessary."

You don't have to have phone service, but in order to get Digital Server Line (DSL) service, it requires a "line" into your house.
