Somewhere, out there.
Well, They finally got DSL out to us (thanks to our very wealthy neighbor paying Qwest to run the lines  ) and I signed up. Sooo, I'm cruising now compared to my dial-up.

My problem is this: it is supposed to be an "always on" connection but when I get back to my computer after going to do other things, I have to restart Windows XP to get my connection back. I try the "repair" option and that does nothing. I thought I'd just be able to come back and start surfing. Is this the way it works? Do I need to change a setting somewhere?

I tried Earthlink (my ISP) and they were no help.

It should be an "always on" connection. Have you tried turning the modem on and off? Google "dsl troubleshooting" there are several step by step guides to help solve your problem.

First impression: Line drop by ISP
Second: Bad DSL modem
Check out DSLreports.com for tips and tricks!

It should always be on.

What happens to make it stop? It doesn't just stop workign while you are cruising the web, but you get up and come back to your PC and it isn't working anymore?

Sounds like a time-out problem at earthstink. are you using the isp's browser, or are you using IE or Mozilla?

I did some searching on Google and Earthlink and at DSL Reports. I couldn't find a direct answer. I even did the online chat with Earthlink and got nowhere.

The modem is on all the time, I've never turned it off.
The connection is fine while I'm surfing.
I am using Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP Home with all the updates.
Modem is brand new (of course that doesn't mean it isn't bad).

The problem occurs after the computer has been left alone for awhile.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to do some more digging and hopefully I'll come up with something.

Try connecting to something that neither your computer or the earthlik servers will recognize as activity. Something like streaming audio from a radio station. Leave it connected and playing, and wait to see if the music stops. If it does, and you are around, what else might have just happened? Did the phone ring? Did a call come in on call waiting? A fax? Your home alarm checked in? Your DTV box checked in?

This should help to rule out connection issues. You might also want to check with that rich neighbor to see if they are having similar issues.

edit: forgot to spellcheck

Sounds like a filter not on an extension or possibly a line problem. I just had AT&T come out because everytime I used the phone (or the neighbors did) the DSL connection would get dropped. Fortunately once the extension was hung up, the connection came back. Good luck!

I'm leaning to what Geldor1 is saying. Your power options set in the bios are being enabled. Try disabling them and see what that does.

Specifically the NIC (Network Interface Card) setting.

Thanks for all the help.

It seems to be line noise. I'm going to be running a dedicated line from the box to the modem and that should take care of it. It's definitely in the house as some of the wiring is a little older.

Thanks again! This place never ceases to amaze me...:)
