This goes out to all the Xtend owners out there:

I recently purchased an Xtend and occasionally, not always, the metal, scissor style closing cap jams in the open position and then randomly starts working again. Does this ever happen to you or should I just send mine in as possibly defective (any quick fixes)?

Thanks

Mine is working great. Try taking out the bottom screw carefully and pulling the lighter apart. There may be some junk or something in the mechanism. If not, Mark is right, just fire it in for repair.

No problems with the closing mechanism. However, I did screw up my lighter with inferior butane. DuPont's customer service was awesome, fixed my lighter no charge and quickly sent it back with a kind note reminding me to only use their butane.

Figured I would add to this post instead of starting fresh since it's Xtend related. I am very happy with the lighter, but dang does the lighter get hot after toasting a cigar!!! The top have of the lighter is almost to hot to touch. I guess I am used to the Blazer or other lighters where there is less heat transfer. I was amazed at that considering the price.

good to know...it is right near my brothers house.

Mine did the same thing....used a little rubbing alcohol to loosen up the crap on it....then a little oil - works like a charm.

Actually - JimD did this for me when I was at his shop!

Isnt that the same location for the Colibri repair?

I recently got my first X-Tend(wish I known about Mark then) and it worked fine for a couple of months. I smoke maybe a fourth of my cigar's smoking time while walking after supper. A few weeks ago, it was impossible to light. The lever seemed to be frozen. I too thought it might be a sticking scissor-lid opening. After 4 or 5 tries, it would ignite.

Luckily, I asked for help before trying to force the lever. I started a thread on another board and a BOTL came up with the answer. Nothing was wrong with the lighter. It has a ball(bearing?) that stays at the pivot point of the lever until.......you turn the X-Tend sideways or downwards. The ball then rolls(silently--I never heard anything) towards the upper end of the lever, blocking any inward movement of the lever. Yes. while walking and touching up my cigar, I was tilting my lighter. Since then, it's back to being perfect.

If you try to light it upside down or at a downward angle...it won't depress.

I figured it was a safety feature....freaked me out when it first happened!

The scissor cap thing has happened to me a couple times. I just didn't worry about it because after hitting the switch again it closed and functioned as normal. It comes and goes. So you're saying I should send it it Mark? I don't have another lighter. :( Looks like I get to make a trip to the B&M for a lighter. :p Haha.

I've only had the lighter scissor part stay open if I'm lighting my pipe (I know you shouldn't use a torch, but I'm trying to get the last bit out of the bowl) and went I cut it off and turn it back up, it's open. Once I click it on/off, it's fine. The best lighter I've ever had or used, IMHO.

(for future owners) I recommend you look for a case or cover of some sort. I know you can search here, I've talked about it before. I didn't listen and the Opus logo is almost scratched completely off mine, and also it looks beat to hell, but I still love it! :D

I'm very disapointed with this lighter. You'd think for $137 plus 6.40 shipping , it would work longer than 4 months.

Doc.
