Hi all,

For those expert movie burners out there, perhaps someone can assist this DVD newb :sign:

Just picked up a Sony DRX-800UL

It came with Nero, but couldn't do much because of copy protection. I downloaded DVD43 I think and that was handled. Had an older version of DVDX Platinum, and it ripped the movie to my hard drive, but failed the burning a few minutes into it.

I got DVDShrink, that worked fine, and when I used that app to burn, it failed again during the write. I came across a search here where someone used DVD Shrink to rip and compress, then use Nero, tried it but it failed again.

I have the 2 latest versions of 1Click DVD (which I got primarily for taping TV show DVDs), but I misplaced my serial # :whistling:

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks brothers!
Robert

Have you flashed the firmware on that burner? A google search on your model + "problem" sometimes yields clues.

What media are you using?

Oh, and do you have issues burning anything else? Can you burn a DVD with just standard data on it?

Using DVD Shrink is the best program to turn it into a .ISO file for burning. Use DVD Decrypter to burn your dvd's.

What media are you burning to? I use NOTHING but Verbatim or Ridata in my Sony....she seems to prefer those two brands and ive never botched a burn.

PM sent.

As for media, I use Verbatim Movie Reels for movies (obviously) and Fuji DVD-R for all other burns. The reasoning for the Fuji is that the dye used on the -R is far superior than that used by the +R or even other brands.

Of course, this can also be drive-specific. I use a BenQ... Ridata is a real downer for us while other brands swear by it.

Have not flashed the firmware yet.

I'm using TDK DVD +R. Is that wrong to use +R over -R?
Reason I use TDK is when I first started burning CDs years ago, they were consistently good and I had a "coaster" factor of about 1 in 100. So I figured TDK would make good DVD media.

No, I have not yet tried to burn anything other than movies.

PM coming back at ya Vewy

I have had good results with -R, and Sony or Fugi. Your manual should tell you which one is compatible. The -R seems to work with newer DVD recorders, IMO.
I use a standalone unit, and found Sony -R almost 100% while verbatim about 20% success (and i stay away from memorex too). Depends all on firmware and hardware.

Hmmmm..

"An OPC error or data integrity problem may possibly occur with 4x DVD+R media.
... DRU-800A | DRX-800UL. Improvements: Writing performance and reliability ..."

Upgrade that firmware and try the media that Sony included with the burner instead of the TDK (assuming you bought retail and not OEM drive). Also when you get a chance try a standard write to check that it functions in general.

i have always used -R format media amd never had problems burnining on my dual layer/format NEC drive. i had a sony in the past, and once again, always used DVD-R, never any issues.

I've never had problems with Mitsui DVD-R. From what I know, -R seems to be more compatible.

For any and all help in the DVD burning, authoring department you MUST check out this site. It has all of your answers and then some!

I agree go with -R it more widely used and more players support it. That combined with DVD fab and your set. I just taught my 8 year old nephew how to burn rentals and he has made over 100 without a single bad disk!

OK, burned one last night, popped it in, and it played. About 40 minutes into the movie it froze for a sec, then again in a few minutes, and then a few minutes it stopped completely.

Media???

Ridata or Verbatim should be +R or -R?

???

Also, use Nero CD Speed -> Disk Quality test to determine just how good your burn was. It will also tell you the kind of dye that is used on your media.

---> possibly. Compatability issues to (check this site to see if there are any compatability situations with your media and the player you have.

Most definitely -R media. Also, the faster you burn the more errors your computer can make via the burner. The slower the burn the more confident the information can be processed and burned.

Thanks fellas!

I'm gonna head out and pick up some different media.
Will post after my first burn.

In the meanwhile, I got TDK DVD+R 5ers for sale, cheap and ready for aging :p

Try to get Fuji DVD-R. Comes in a blue box. You can get them at Best Buy. I'd link which one I'm talking about except their website is down. If you go to the store, look for the ones made in Japan. Those use a better type of ink than those made in China or Taiwan.
