Hey Guys,

Just recently starting to get into pipes.
Growing up with my Gramps constantly puffing on a pipe, I have always be intrigued with the pipe
and the many different types of tobacco that is associated with it.

Im just gathering information and have a question.
I have been searching websites recently looking to buy a pipe.

What exactly is an Estate Pipe vs. Normal "new" pipe?

Thanks

An "Estate" pipe is normally one that was smoked and left to an ......... "Estate Sale", I guess. But the term can cover just about all used pipes.

I'm off to bed right now, but tomorrow night I'll be in a hotel in Virginia with 'nuttin but time on my hands, so I'll shoot you a PM with a few links.

Unless it's for pride of ownership, I'd recommend Estate.

I was getting into pipes for a bit a while back. That didn't last too long.

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain "estate" just equals "used". So, used vs new, to answer your question (I think). Used pipes on the market is a common thing, especially for the high end pipes. It's not terribly difficult to find a place to thoroughly clean them out and fix or replace any parts that need mending.

So Estate is just a fancy term for "Ive been chewed on already !" :p :p
How do you usual clean an estate pipe? Do you usually replace the stem or just clean it?
Ive heard that toothpaste works?

I bought an estate pipe a couple months back, and the store had "refurbished" it I guess you could call it. The inside of the bowl was still charred from use which I don't think you can or would want to clean totally (I could be wrong there) but the stem (not sure if that's what you call it) the part you put in your mouth was totally perfect. I'm assuming they have some buffing wheel that cleans that up and makes it look like new again. I thought it was a good deal, I got an $80 pipe for $20.

An Estate Pipe refers to a high quality used pipe from Manufacturers such as Dunhill, Davidoff, Stanwell etc. A used pipe would be a Dr. Grabow, Kaywoodie etc. The difference is just like buying a Chippendale table and one made in China. One becomes an antique one becomes junk. The Dunhill will hold it's value and sometimes gain value over time as opposed to the others becoming near worthless.

Any good websites with Estate Pipes for sale?

Hey Emil. Sorry I'm a day late getting back to you on this.

I can recommend 4 sites, two of which I have ordered from, the other two come highly recommended and I have nothing to gain from either of the 4 (usual disclaimer, yadda yadda).
[post="http://www.frenchyspipes.com/"]Frenchy's Pipes[/post] is a good place to start. He'll take good care of ya and I think he ships to Canada.

[post="http://www.smokingpipes.com/"]Smoking Pipes[/post] is another place that has a real good selection of new & Estste pipes. They do ship to Canada.

[post="http://www.deadmanspipes.com/estate.html"]Dead Man's Pipes[/post] may have the best selection of "Presmoked" pipes of all sites I've seen.

[post="http://www.stevespipes.new2youresale.com/"]Steve's Pipes & Tampers[/post] is a place I've bought a couple of pipes from. He's fairly new to the E-Sales and his site is growing.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Thanks for the stores Newfie.
Will look them up....

BTW: The links are dead.

I smoked pipes for a while but didn't really stick with it. They are a lot of work and I'm lazy. So, I have tons of pipes and stuff that are collecting dust. I guess it's time to ebay.
