Estimated cost of construction per sq ft.

Does anyone know of a site that offers the estimated price per sq ft, based on location?

Final plan we are building includes adding two bedrooms down stairs, and a fireplace in the office. Also a couple other minor changes.

i just designed a big house outside of seattle but havent got any of the #'s back yet. from our prelim #'s its about 10% more than it is here in texas, which is $100 per foot including builder fees. obviously that depends greatly on your finish out. but for a nice 3500-6000 s.f home, thats about average.
 
Cool. That gives me something to go on. We are about 45 minutes NE of Seattle. Ours will be 2300 sq ft carriage house, and we already have the plans. Our finish out will not be anything to fancy, but nice. This house is going to be a temporary residence for us until we build again a few years down the road. Then most likely a rental.

Let me see if I can post a link to the pdf version of the plans for everyone to look at.

Again it depends on location, but numbers between $150-$200 per sq. foot are not out of question especially if you pick nice appliances, have good finish/trim work done, choose nicer flooring. Plus don't forget to consider cost of landscaping.

In very rural MN, we had quotes around $175 per sq foot, for high end construction, a very tough plan and roofline, and top end finishing.

I'm gonna take a guess and assume that is for a house with a basement. A basement shoots the price per foot through the roof. And I'm betting his house in Seattle has no basement.
 
Here's the plan we were going to build. The quotes we had were for this plan, with a basement, however the basement would not be finished at this time. So we were looking at about 2800 finished sq. feet, and a cost of close to $500k to build. That did not include the cost of the land itself or the landscaping. If I recall correctly the builder we were going to use (btw we ended up not building) had said that the additional cost of finishing the basement would have been around $50/sq foot, which would have actually brought the overall cost per sq foot down closer to $150ish.

When that house was built for the tv show up in Mpls, I was told by the original architect that it ran around $200/sq foot, not including the land.

But like Marc said, those numbers are geographic, and he's probably alot more in the know that myself since he's in the business!
 
I forgot to add, if you click on the link, check out the other images to the right of the main house picture, there's some really good interior and detail pics that show the kind of detail and woodwork that I'm referring to, which brings the cost per sq foot up significantly. And the plans themselves are at the bottom of the page.
 
Around us it is ~$125-150 sq. ft. right now. We built five years ago and it was closer to $95 sq. ft. By the time we were done, it came out to around $125 sq. ft. So, if you plan any extras and trust me, you'll have extras, LOL, guess high in the planning stage.
