Does anyone here have any experience hosting an exchange student? We are going to be welcoming a 16 year old girl from Hamburg into our home for the next school year, beginning in August. My sister-in-law hosted two students last year and will have two more this year and convinced us to take on a student. The girl is half German, half Viatnamese, but has always lived in Hamburg, Germany. She speaks English almost fluently, has a strong interest in art, music and dance and is quite a good student. We are still waiting on the final paperwork to go through the local high school, but it looks to be moving ahead. I'm just curious if anyone else here has had a similar experience. Also, to our German members, what kind of a female attitude should I expect from a teenage German girl. LOL!

...it could get ugly!

Well done on helping out!

Bruddah, you said a mouthful.

On a more serious note, my wife's aunt's family has been hosting exchange students for close to 15 years and they have found it to be a very challenging but fulfilling endeavor. But then they are fairly well off and can provide attention, resources, and enrichment opportunities. I'd say that if your family situation (in all dimensions) suits having a strange teenager in your house, then this could be a very good thing...especially for your children of similar age.

Wilkey

"Host" an exchange student? I guess what I did to those dutch exchange girls many, many years ago was "hosting" them. :sign:

Seriously though, never formally done the progam myself, but way to go for participating Matt. Kinda surprised they'd see fit to use you as a host in the first place. :sign:

You're all a bunch of pervs......

We don't have kids of similar ages. We have twin boys who are turning 8. We need a babysitter.... just kidding of course, as I'm trying to be serious here. As far as finances, while I am far from rich, the program itself provides for most of the expenses. In reality, we are only required to provide three meals a day. All other costs as far as schooling, etc. are by the program. The extra-curricular costs are to be covered by the student. My sister-in-law had no issues with money matters over the last year, though I can see with the way my wife likes to shop, that we could. LOL!

My sister in law hosted a kid from Romania or some such former Iron Curtain country a few years ago. The kid was a lazy slug with hygene problems. She made the best of it, but was glad to be rid of him. All the girls I know of have been a pleasure to host.

I knew a few exchange students, my thoughts are if there out going enough to do something like this and learn a second language like that there probably not going to be a problem. As far as hosting, theres two types of hosts, theres ones were they treat the exchange student like they are there own kid, same rules ect. Theres others who act like there a parole officer and they'll depot the kid at the drop of a hat.

The plan is to treat her as our own, problem is, I have absolutely no experience with a 16 year old, let alone a 16 year old girl. I am confident in my parenting style though and will treat her as my own, allowing her any opportunities I would allow my own child.

 I'm sure you'll be fine matty, do with her what you do with your wife, pretend to listen and offer up advice every now and again.

we had an 18yr old aupair from germany. 6ft tall blonde bitch :whistling: , but great kid. the German kids from the program we meet seem'ed to be very grounded. she told me her goal was to culture us. I told her is was our job to corrupt her. We won she went home and went to school to be a lawyer. Knew some people that had french girls and kind of a smelly problem. One of the girls that was in the aupair program was from spain and she was a handfull. Hot as HECK, liked to party and ended up running off with some guy. good luck and may the force be with you. Some times it was very hard to have a young lady around. Might be different because she is only 16.

I hosted a Brazilian guy way back when! He became a very close friend, we had the time of our lives!

I got him on the football team since he was a soccer player and could kick the ball a mile! He and the coach didn't get along but he won a big game for us with a long fieldgoal against Jim Kelly of Buffalo Bills fame.

Half German, half Vietnamese, she is probably beautiful. Prayers sent, don't show her your weinerschnitzel or you'll be a Fark.com headline. ;)

um, no Matt...do NOT do with her what you do with your wife... :sign:

Treat her like you would your own, my niece was an exchange student during the train bombing in Spain. The Spanish family treated her as one of their own, and aside from the bombing incident she had an enjoyable experience. I f you are hosting her during the summer, take her to the good old American game of Baseball, i'm sure she'll get a kick out of it. Is'nt there a minor league team out your way?

I thought he had his own chapter in that new book...

So she'll be changing your TV channels for you and getting you Budweisers from the fridge? Sweet!
