Vegas, baby!
On Monday, May 7, this year and after working another 13 hour day, I was having dinner with my wife and son, when Joshua asked me if I was going to take him to school the next day. That was part of our routine, I usually closed the store on Tuesdays and would have some Joshua and Daddy time in the morning before I would take him to school. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I had to tell him that I couldn't take him because I had to work early again the next day and couldn't take him.
Previous to this conversation, I had been working 6 or 7 days a week, since we had our "wage management initiative" a year ago March, and I had to fire the best 40% of my employees. This was followed by the "management model" change a year ago June where I had to let 40% of my managers go. Most of my days were 12+ hours. I had been contemplating giving my keys up the week before Black Friday, like one of my buddies did.
Leave to my, then five year old, son to make see what is truly important. After I told him that I couldn't take him to school, he asked me, "Daddy, why don't you ask your manager to ask another manager to work for you so you could have a day off with me?". That pretty much sealed my fate right then and there. I called my District Manager the next day and told him that we needed to talk. I gave him my two weeks notice, and walked out of the store on May 22, after 18 and a half years.
On January 1, 2006, on this board, I stated that my plan for the year was "to be the best daddy I can be". I got away from that. Thanks to the gift from my son, I am getting back on track. Last weekend we went to San Diego for the weekend and I asked Joshua what his favorite part of the trip was. He told me that it was being with mommy and daddy, not the Zoo, not Sea World, not the Wild Animal Park. You can imagine how that makes me feel. I made the right decision.
This Father's Day, remember who we are honoring. I lost my father almost five years ago, and my mentor(just like a father to me) just a few months later. Fortunately, my step-father-in-law is still around, so tomorrow, I will spend some quality time with him on the golf course. If my other father-in-law was here in Vegas, I would do the same with him. Golf will be followed by a jump in the pool and having Joshua help daddy with the grilling.
Dads, let's be the best daddy's we can be this next year. My gift came early.

Well said, Gregor. I wasn't planning to see my father until evening. I think I'll make plans to get over there earlier and take him to the driving range (He really enjoys the driving range) or something.

Very nice, Gregor. I would say you definitely made the right decision. :)

Nice post! It's easy to loose focus and forget what's truly important in life. Happy father day dude!

I'm getting ready for our 7:00 am tee time, Dad & I. Then it's back home to spend time with him and my 10 month old daughter.

Well played !

Happy Father's Day !

Great Post! It's a wonderful thing to have the wisdom of a child to make us all see what is truly important! Enjoy your day Gregor!

GREAT POST! Funny how children can make us realize these things. The "Cats in the Cradle"........

Gregor, that was a moving story. Thanks for sharing it with us. It really puts things in perspective. Happy Father's Day.

Gregor,
It is so easy to get caught up in day to day life, that it is often very easy to forget what is important.
It is clear that you made a great decision, not only for your son, but for your peace of mind.

Greg, that is what it is all about! We get lost in the grind and forget what it is that matters most. I'm very happy that Joshua enjoyed his family trip! Hope to see you guys soon. Say hello and happy Fathers day to your father-in-law for me.

Happy Fathers Day to all

Thanks for sharing Gregor. Time with your kids is always the most rewarding. I lost my Father when I was relatively young and have always treasured the time I spent with him more than the gifts he ever bought me. He was never a fan of Father's Day - he felt like you should appreciate you Father EVERY day and it sounds like your son does. :D
Happy Father's Day to you and all of the Fathers out there.

Thanks for all of the kind words. I have had a terrific three weeks away from the grind; becoming known as Joshua's dad at his school, enjoying a few games of golf, cooking dinner(Mr.Mom), and just spending time with my family. My former company used to talk about making sure that you had a work/life balance, and we all know talk is cheap. For me, when I do decide to get another job(Tony), it's going to be all about LIFE/work balance. Happy Father's Day to all.

Gregor

You floored me in Vegas with that revelation, Greg. You should go apply at the Home Depot - sell 2x4s. That's what I'm going to do when I leave telecom.

Good for you Greg

I made the same decision in the early 90's when my daughter was born, my second child, and I turned 30 years old. Not an easy thing to do or to maintain, if you stick with it you'll see what I mean. You learn to understand and accept balance, I don't live in a big fancy house, or drive the best car but I am quite comfortable, happy and I know my children.

I thought you already had your WalMart greeter smock.
