FBI can listen to your cell phone, even when it's off...

I try to drop keywords everything time I use AIM. If they want to waste their time tracking the conversations of a college student, let em :laugh: But honestly, isn't this stuff that has been going on since the dawn of time? Big Brother is always watching you, somehow. Just don't do anything too terrible.

I don't know how much of this I believe. I know there are cellphones that when called by a certain number can auto answer silently. However this is new to me and I'd like to think I'm up on these sort of stories.

Just a couple links I found on google... I heard about this probably around November of last year. Apparently it has to do with the microphones inside your phone, rather than the make/model/ and bulk of electronics. I think I saw this on the local news in New Hampshire/Boston area a while back as well.

well getting a fake warrant is not that hard for them - they really can do anything they want, now that the laws are passed to do so...

Dude, step away from the television :laugh: Messin with you. Seriously though, the FBI gets its warrants through federal court, federal judges. The federal judges in MN do not f..k around. Fake warrant, no way. Not in this district at least.

Also, I'm not sure what FBI agents are being referred to, but the vast majority of these guys work on Identity Theft, Child Pornography, thousands of different types of Fraud schemes... Between the Fraud and the Child Pornography alone, these agents have NO time to listen to random people's cell phones. They are completely swamped. Not only in the investigation, but also in the litigation. They have to go to all the hearings, the trials, the sentencings. They have to conduct their own interviews, and the have to sit through all the prosecutions interviews.

I don't work for the FBI and I could care less what people think of them, but the above is the truth.

I like what the college kid said above. "Just don't do anything too terrible." F..k, that's my motto, and he's right.

The FBI doesn't care about a loser like me. If I worried about that, I should think that those terrorist bastard Al Tali fuggin' Ban are lurking in my backyard just waiting for their chance to take me out. If they listen, who cares? They'll just here me talkin' dirty to my wife!

here=hear. damn! :)

Thanks for the links. That gave me a BIT more details. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that way they (FBI) are doing this is through NextTel phones and to be honest I didn't even think of NextTel when this came up. Or I guess any carrier with a Push To Talk (PTT) system. When the phone is on its "joined" to the PTT network you have with friends/family/employees. All that needs to be done is for the FBI to issue the PTT command to the phone (which is possible) and then either be on the same network, or just use a scanner for the data.

The links above all pretty much said the same thing, but the one about the mobsters who were busted by they're NextTel phones was what made me think of this. Other traditional phones require the user to join the network or Point to Point call. The spy phone I referenced before was one that when receiving a call auto accepts this network join request. NextTel however auto logs in when the phone is powered on.

Savvy thinking on the part of the FBI.

Your tax dollars have been working much harder than you think - for quite some time. None here have anything to worry about so long as you stay away from the key words. I doubt CUBAN CIGARS qualify.

I'm sure that the overseers who monitor Carnivore and its successors really love all the frequent talk around here of bombs going through the mail and whatnot.

Have a nice cigar tonight, snoop-who-ends-up-reading-this.
