So this past Wednesday was my 4 year wedding anniversary and my wife and I got to talking today about our honeymoon and had a few good laughs. So I thought I would share the story with the brothers here and see if anyone else had a bad experience on a honeymoon.
Well it all started the day of our wedding Saturday June 14[sup]th[/sup] 2008 we had gotten up early that day at 6am as we had a ton to do. We went our separate ways and for the day and would meet at the ceremony later that night. Ceremony started at 5:30pm and the reception followed right after and went late till 1am. In short on the wedding it was outstanding we had the greatest time that we could have ever asked for. By the time we got home it was 2:30am and her little brother was picking us up at 4:30am to bring us to the airport for our flight to Cancun Mexico at 6:30am Sunday morning. We just sat up and talked about the wedding till her brother arrived to bring us to the airport. We arrived to the airport with no issues and got on our flight to Chicago O’Hara Airport where we are going to grab our connector to Cancun. On our approach to Chicago it started to rain really badly and they diverted our plane to Minnesota to sit on the runway till the rain cleared. Once the rain cleared we made our way down to Chicago where naturally our plane to Cancun has already left. I contact the airline and speak to them about getting on another flight and they don’t have one till the next day being Monday night we would arrive in Mexico or they can transfer us over to a Mexican airline and get us there early Monday morning. So I say let’s transfer. Now this is where I start to laugh now a day. I asked the lady on the phone “are you going to transfer our luggage over as well” she says “your luggage is already in Mexico” me “how is that possible we didn’t make the flight it took off before we even landed in Chicago” her “sir your luggage made the flight and will be waiting for you in Mexico” me “innless you transferred it midflight it didn’t make my flight but we are running short on time so we need to run to catch our next flight good by”. So we run across O’Hara to get to our flight and we are on our way to Mexico for a week in paradise…so I thought!
Now our flight lands in Mexico and when we get out of the plane to my surprise we are in Mexico City not Cancun. I was not informed that we were having another layover in Mexico City. Now at this point I am just spent my wife is tired and we are in the scariest airport I have ever seen. Time wise we are somewhere around Sunday night at 6pm or so. Now we have been up since Saturday at 5:30am so that puts us at 36.5 hours that we have been awake. Finally 4 scary hours later they call our flight to Cancun and we are on our way again.
Arriving in Cancun was a sigh of relief when the plane doors opened. We go to get our luggage and yep you guessed it nothing. Both bags were lost so off to lost luggage we head. Fill out the paper work and they said when the luggage arrives in the morning they will bring it to the resort for us. We then proceed to security to enter the country. Now if you have ever traveled to Cancun before you have seen the red light green light. You walk up to a light post and pushes a button if it turns green you are good to go. If it turns red they need to search your bags (high class security). Well we walk up and I push the button and yes green. Now my wife and when she pushes the button it goes to red. We have no bags. We have the clothes on our backs, passports and cash. They couldn’t understand the fact that we had no bags and they were lost. So after talking with security they finally let us in to the country. 30 minute van ride and we arrive to our resort in Riviera Maya at 3am Monday Morning. The Resort has heard all the trouble that we have go thru and had upgraded us to the biggest suite they had. We go to bed and hope to start our vacation in the morning. Finally some sleep after being awake for 45.5 hours.
Well we wake up refreshed and call down to see if our bags have arrived. Let me just save some typing and fast forward to Wednesday afternoon. Yes Wednesday we finally get a call that they found our luggage. We spent the first 3 days in the room because we had no clothes to where other than the clothes we had on. My wife had on a Patriots Jersey so needless to say people started to notice we were wearing the same clothes every day. The hotel was doing our laundry for us for free which was great. Well back to the luggage being found. I am told it is in customs and I need to come down and get it. However the cab ride is $90 one way. We truck on over to the airport and when we finally get there we are informed they found just one bag not both. I am now at my breaking point and have totally given up all I can do is hope the bag they have is my wife’s so we can get on to vacation and I will make do with what I have. The security agent wheels out the bad and thank the lord it’s hers. Now she has all her new clothes, hair stuff, and her bathing suits. I still just have the clothes on my back. We truck back to the hotel and I buy a bathing suit in the gift shop. Remember I’m 6’8” in Mexico so sizes are very limited. The swim suit I got was skin tight short shorts…LOL I grabbed a few shirts to rotate thru and finally on Wednesday night we start our very expensive honeymoon. From this point on it is like how every honeymoon should be you know what I mean! As for my luggage you guessed it 4 years now and I have never seen it again and never received a thing from the airline.
We learned a few major travel lessons here. One is to pack a carry on. Two is to always book a direct flight for any vacation and if you can’t get direct DO NOT TRANFER to another airline.
Hope you guys enjoyed this long story and maybe learned something from it. If you have a good story please share.
